Yankton, South Dakota is a town in the U.S. state of South Dakota and the county seat of Yankton County. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Missouri River in eastern Sioux County. The first permanent white settlement in what became Yankton was made by Captain John Duryea in 1881 when he began to travel upriver for coalmining reasons. He named his new community "Duryea" for himself and his exploratory party, but it reverted to its original name after he sold it to Captains Ladd and Fremont in 1888. The name "Yankton" was chosen because it sounded like an American Indian word meaning "to swing." In 1896, the United States Postal Service established a post office at Yankton with mail service from Rapid City; however, this service did not continue past 1911. In 1916, the U.S. Post Office moved from Rapid City to Yankton due to railroad construction nearby and never reopened there again; since then, only street addresses have been assigned there as mail boxes are now stored at Republican National Committee headquarters acrosstown (see Roosevelt Drive). In 1951, Yankton voters passed an ordinance establishing a city government which would later be renamed Sioux Falls after both cities were merged into one municipality in 1973 under then-Governor Cecil Bogan (D). Since that time, much growth has occurred within both cities while also affecting neighboring towns such as Wanaminga (northwest) and Bridgwater (southwest). Most recently, extensive redevelopment has taken place around downtown Yankton proper with new businesses opening up along Roosevelt Drive between Main Street south and 21st Avenue east during 2016-present day light rail operations running through downtown connector station/parking garage make access easy for all visitors without having to leave central business district or use other streets or areas near airport/train stations easily accessible outside of rush hours during peak periods neither making pedestrians or bicyclists feel unsafe even though bike lanes have not been installed on most major streets adjacent to airport providing easy access by car from Interstate 45W exit gasoline parking lot directly opposite main bus stop area
