The history of artisan coffee in Yankton, South Dakota goes back to the 1860s. The first coffee roasters in Yankton were Frenchman Pierre-Alexandre Lafitte and his brother-in-law, Jean-Baptiste Lefebvre. In 1871, they opened a small shop on Main Street called La Bodega de Lafitte. Lafitte's coffee was first exported to the United States in 1874. He sold it under the name "French Roaster's Coffee." One of Lafitte's sons, also named Pierre-Alexandre, started selling coffee at the grocery store on First Avenue in Yankton in 1893. By 1912, all of La Bodega de Lafitte's customers had moved to one location on State Street in downtown Yankton. In 1924, Mr. and Mrs. John Witherspoon bought La Bodega de Lafitte from its founders and operated it as their own business until it closed in 1949. After World War II ended, many farmers who had grown beans for French Roaster's Coffee now began selling their own versions of the product under different names such as Joe Black or Spicy Joe''. Some continue to do so today while others have converted to pod systems or switched entirely to digital brewing equipment. The Yankton Artisan Coffee Company (YACC) was founded by Donny Morse on October 1st, 1969 with two sacks of beans that he bought from an old farmer on Highway 11 near Keystone Lake Dam #2A about seventy miles west of Sioux Falls, SD). At its peak membership numbered over 150 people and produced around 6200 pounds of specialty coffee each year! Donny Morse passed away on December 3rd 1990 at the ripe age of 79 years old after a long and successful career as an artisan coffee roaster and dealer! His memory will be deeply commemorated by those who enjoy premium quality cup OFC coffees made within our community - especially during these difficult economic times!

Over the years, Yankton has undergone many changes and expansions, including a move to a new location in 1978 and a growth in population that culminated with the incorporation of neighboring towns into Yankton in 2006. Today, Yankton remains an active community with strong cultural ties to its Sioux people and longtime relationships with nearby communities such as Rapid City and Pierre. The town’s rich history is also evident through its many museums and attractions, which offer visitors unique insights into local history and culture. In addition to its rich cultural heritage, Yankton offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking, biking, hunting, swimming/diving,and golfing – all of which are enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. Due to its strategic location on both sides of the Missouri River – just north of Pierre County on the west side; south of Rapid City on the east side – Yankton has been called “the Gateway to North Dakota” due to its potential for economic development around water resources or transportation links within North Dakota or across Canada or Mexico. Additionally, it enjoys excellent access to schools and other amenities located close by (including Rapid City), making it an attractive place for inward investment or business ventures as well as family vacationers looking for easy access to metropolitan areas but without all of thecommercial distractions encountered elsewhere in North Dakota or Manitoba.

It is located on the Yankton Sioux Nation and was founded in 1879 by white settlers who named it for General John A. Yankton, an American military general who had fought in Mexico and Cuba. The town was originally settled by farmers in what is now central South Dakota but began to grow rapidly after the discovery of gold in nearby Rushmore District in 1876. By 1890, Yankton had a population of 3,000 people and became one of the most important towns on the reservation. In 1907, it absorbed the neighboring community of Eagle Butte into its municipal government. In 1994, Yankton voters approved a resolution recognizing Native American ancestry within their community and its history as part of Indian Country. The city has also been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002.
