Watertown is a small town in east-central South Dakota, United States. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. Watertown is the home of the first commercially produced coffee in the world and one of the most well known coffee towns in America. The town was founded by Norwegian immigrants on Valentine's Day 1881 as a farmstead named "New Town". The name was changed to "Watertown" after a local stream, Waterville Creek, became too polluted for farming. In 1907, Watertown became part of Rapid City and its city government moved from downtown to new facilities across Third Street from Main Street. In 1922, Rapid City annexed Watertown and renamed it their new city hall. In 1933, Watertown's water system failed and resulted in a major depression that affected much of Sioux Falls County. The town responded with an economic boom that saw construction of several hospitals, schools, churches and businesses along Second Street between Main and Capitol Streets until 1949 when Interstate 85 cut through the center of townsite creating what is now central Business District (CBD). This area has experienced significant gentrification over recent years with many high-end businesses moving into this district including Amazon Alexa headquarters which leased 121 Eighth Ave SW from CBRE Holdings Incorporated in 2017 for $1 billion On January 1st 2020 Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf announced they would be leaving South Dakota for Aurora Colorado effective February 1st 2020 citing low market prices for coffee beans due to increased production costs associated with climate change regulations
