During the war, it became one of the largest US airfields and served as a base for Allied planes flying missions over Nazi Germany. The town also played a significant role in later wars including Iraq and Afghanistan. Since the end of World War II, Watertown has seen some changes. In 2008, it became home to an American Air Force Base which serves as both an operational headquarters for NATO member countries and also provides employment for locals. Additionally, there are now several businesses located within walking distance of each other which have helped support downtown Watertown’s growth over the years. Despite these recent changes, Watertown still retains much of its historical charm and culture from when the town was founded by settlers in 1875. This cultural heritage is evident in both its architecture and cuisine; both local dishes and national staples are enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. Watertown is a small town in Warren County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sioux City, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area. Watertown was founded in 1881 by James Fenton and John Ewing as a farm community on the edge of what is now Watertown Proper. In 1902, Fenton donated land to become the city limits of Watertown. In 1907, Mayor George Waddell erected a toll booth on US 61 in downtown Watertown to collect fees for using the road. The booths were replaced by automated machines in 1951 and discontinued after that year. The first store opened in Watertown in 1881 by James Fenton and John Ewing as a farm stall near present-day Fourth Street and Main Avenue. In 1902, Fenton donated land to become the city limits of Watertown; this donation became known as "Fenton Heights". The first mayor of Watertown was George Waddell who served from 1907 until his death in 1928. In 1951, Mayor Louis Kapp installed an automated machine toll booth on US 61 just north of downtown which continued operation until it closed its doors for good in 1978; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of automated vehicle collection systems throughout America. Watertown has experienced many changes throughout its history including becoming an agricultural center during World War II due to increased production due to increased demand from munitions plants around Sioux City; however, since then much commerce has centered around education with many businesses having been built within walking distance or less of most classrooms across town including Drake University (the largest university outside Chicago), South Dakota State University (largest public university west of Interstate 80), and several high schools such as Academy High School which overlooks downtown water traffic each day without ever having any students or staff based there full time. One such business that continues to thrive despite being right next door Olmsted Elementary School is Park 'N Play which offers children's play equipment, building materials etc., while also providing parents with information about local events/programs happening nearby

Watertown is a town in Douglas County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 2,822 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Douglas County. Watertown was laid out by Lew Wallace in 1875. It was named for Watertown, Massachusetts. Wallace's mill and gristmill were built there in 1876 and 1877, respectively. The first post office in Watertown was established in 1880. The Union Pacific Railroad reached Watertown by way of Rapid City on February 26, 1889. At that time it was the largest city east of the Missouri River without a railroad connection; its citizens had to travel to Rapid City or Sioux Falls for goods and services. The first telephone service arrived here on April 12, 1909. In 1916, the United States Supreme Court ruled that white men could not serve as jury commissioners in Douglas County because they were unconstitutional racial discrimination against black jurors
Watertown is a town in Sioux County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 997 at the 2000 census. It was founded in 1867 by the trading post and lumber mill owners John A. Dillingham and George W. Atkinson as a small farming community on the Missouri River. In 1870, Watertown became a city after it was granted cityhood by the state of South Dakota. The city gradually grew into an important commercial center on the Missouri River, developing heavy industry including a sawmill, flour mill, chemical plant, meatpacking plants, and paper mills before dissolving into poverty in the 1960s due to economic decline and environmental degradation.
