Sioux Falls, South Dakota is a city in Douglas County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 53,641 at the 2010 census. Sioux Falls is the fifth-largest city in Douglas County and the second-largest city by population within Sioux City metropolitan area. The first permanent settlers arrived on the present-day site of Sioux Falls in 1871. The town was founded on January 1, 1889 by Major George Armstrong Custer, after he led a cavalry unit from Fort Laramie overland through Indian Territory to cross the Missouri River into South Dakota to claim this new land for Great Britain. At its peak during World War II, Sioux Falls had a population of 94,000 people; however it declined due to the war and subsequent postwar recession. In 1970–1980, it experienced an influx of refugees from Cambodia and other countries who were displaced during that decade's Cambodian refugee crisis;[2] as a result, the city's population increased rapidly from 20 to 50 thousand during that decade alone (an increase larger than any other American city). Sioux Falls proper was platted on October 25, 1912 by Jesse Lumber Co., Incorporated developers JL McKay & Sons Limited Partnership with Carlisle Lumber Company cd No: 627887 – which included all future towns east or south of I-394 including what would eventually become downtown Sioux Falls There were initial plans for only three villages: Girdwood (northwest corner intersection with S US Highway 61), Arnold (east side along I-394) and Belle Fourche (southwest corner intersection with S US Highway 61).[3][4] However due to lack funding and engineer availability Chief Engineer John Hildebrand recommended expanding development into all four villages when he submitted his report on November 15th 1912.[5] This proposal became law effective February 2nd 1913 when then Governor Charles Evans Hughes signed legislation creating Steele County.[6][7][8][9] As part of county formation negotiations conducted between counties north and south of Wichita Boulevard - Steeley County took over responsibility for Girdwood Village while Bellevue/Belle Fourche were transferred to Fergus County[10]. Sioux Falls, South Dakota is a city in Douglas County, South Dakota. The population was 108 at the 2010 census. Sioux Falls is the county seat of Douglas County. Sioux Falls Post Office opened on November 1, 1879. The first Sioux people who arrived in what is now South Dakota were located near present-day Sioux City, Iowa and founded the village of Tanka on the Missouri River in 1836. In 1868, they moved their settlement to what is now downtown Sioux Falls after being forced out of their original home by settlers from Nebraska and Minnesota. The city's history began with a group of soldiers called "Cavalry Squadron Twenty" which operated out of Fort Riley during World War II. The squadron was disbanded in 1945 but its memory lives on through nearby military installations such as Fort Riley Army Base and most notably the Combat Infantry Battalion (CIB) museum which has been open since 1951. The city received its name from General George Armstrong Custer who fought at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. At that time, it was known as Standing Rock Indian School because many white children were attending there under Christian missions to learn about Jacksonian democracy and American values while away from their families and tribes. On July 8th, 1898, during Indian Wars #8A & #8B when American forces attempted to retake Blue Earth Agency from Chief Black Hills tribe led by Sitting Bull Lordeader Creek Utes used force including artillery fire against civilians without provocation or warning leading eventually to an estimated 614 fatalities including 338 children accompanying Sitting Bull only 93 survived resulting in him being recognized as a war criminal by both the United States government and later international organizations such as the Hague Tribunal

The city was founded as a result of the Treaty of Ft. Laramie (1868), which resulted in the surrender of the Sioux Nation to U.S. forces.
