Navy deployed gift history in Sioux Falls, South Dakota began with the USS Lexington (CV-2) on December 17, 1941. The Lexington was adestroyer which served as the flagship of Destroyer Squadron 2 in the United States Pacific Fleet. On that day, Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor and when night fell, they had sunk five American warships including the Lexington. This attack made it necessary for President Franklin D. Roosevelt to call up all US Naval vessels and send them to succor Japan. The USS Lexington arrived at San Pedro Bay, California on January 6th 1942 and soon became involved in the Battle of Midway which resulted in her loss. After that battle she served as Rear Admiral Chester W. Nimitz's flagship during his tenure as Commander-in-Chief of US Pacific Fleet from 1943 until 1945. In 1945 she decommissioned at Mare Island Navy Yard and was placed into storage there until she was reactivated again in 1984 by then Vice Admiral John Swayne as Flagship of Destroyer Squadron 9 per order given by then Commodore Gary Luttrell who succeeded Nimitz upon his death in 1946. On October 15th 1984 CVN8 USS Enterprise (CVN-65) pulled alongside the old destroyer while both ships were docked at Mare Island Navy Yard for an overhaul which lasted seven months duration USS Enterprise is one of only four destroyers still afloat that once served with Destroyer Squadron 9 (DesRon 9). The station was originally known as the Army Ammunition Plant and was used to store ammunition during World War I. In 1924, it became the Navy Ammunition Plant and served as such until 1942 when it was renamed the Sioux Falls Naval Station. The station played an important role in World War II and saw significant activity including shipbuilding, mine clearing, amphibious warfare, and aircraft manufacturing. It also played a major role in the Korean War with its ships being used in combat against North Korea. After the war, the navy left Sioux Falls but kept some of its facilities which were later gifted to local businesses or used for other purposes. Today, the naval station is again a part of the military but this time it is known asthe Sioux Falls Naval Base.
Sioux Falls is a city in the U.S. state of South Dakota, on the Missouri River near Sioux City. The population was 23,368 at the 2010 census and is the county seat of Dickinson County. It is named after General " Half-breed" Sioux who fought in the 1876 Battle of Fort Donelson. The city has been founded by European Americans since 1862 when it was part of Valentine Township, now Dickinson County. The first settler in Sioux Falls was James Reese, who arrived there in 1862 with his family from New York City. He built a cabin on Swan Creek and named it Reese's Ferry Landing after himself and his brother-in-law, Miles Craddock. In 1865, John Sibley established a post office at Sioux Falls and named it Sibley's Ferry Landing because he had crossed the Missouri River there earlier that year as an exploratory party for United States Army Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer. In 1868, David Morrison set up a store near what is now downtown Sioux Falls to sell goods brought overland by stagecoaches from Iowa and Nebraska. By 1870, Dakota Territory had been organized into counties; so Morrison’s store became known as “the county seat” or “the hub” of those new counties. By 1872, collisions between steamboats loading supplies downriver and barges carrying passengers upriver were becoming common occurrences; so Daniel McKay built McKay's Wharf to prevent these accidents from happening future too often. In 1875–1876 two companies formed to build a water main through town: The Minneapolis & Omaha Railroad Company (M&O) led by Captain Samuel Morse bought land adjacent to Main Street for $1 per acre (0·8 hectare). M&O hired local blacksmiths George Plessy and John Hargrave to do the construction work but they were fired after only three months because their boss disapproved of their use of white labor – an event which sparked popular resistance against colonialism within rural society throughout America during this period." The M&O Line extended all the way down river to Aberdeen before ending at Pierre where traffic could be transported across country using wagons hauled by horse teams until 1898 when railroads came along making shipping much easier
