Sioux Falls, South Dakota is a city in and the county seat of Sioux County, South Dakota. The population was 95,887 at the 2010 census. It is the sixth-largest city in South Dakota and the second-largest city in Sioux County. The first permanent settler in what became Sioux Falls was David Senter in 1874. The town's name originated from General Pierre Laramie's proclamation that "Sioux Falls will be the capital of this territory" on July 4, 1875. The townsite was patented to George Hennepin on February 19, 1876. Senter built a sawmill and gristmill along with several other businesses in early 20th century Sioux Falls. By 1907, there were over 100 businesses operating in Sioux Falls proper and surrounding villages; by 1930, that number had declined to about 30%. However, during World War II ground Zero for Sioux City redevelopment was located on Depot Street directly across from downtown; as a result of this activity (and others), business growth resumed within two decades following the war’s end. In 1955, when South Dakota entered its new statehood under Indian Reorganization Act provisions implemented pursuant to §1-2-101(a) of that law, Sioux Falls became one of 16 cities included within newly created Steele County which also included Rapid City and Burke City (laterBurke). In 1961 local leaders approved annexation by Brookings County pending ratification of an ordinance providing for staggered annexation elections throughout all 56 counties comprising South Dakota; this vote occurred on May 1st but no ordinance resulted because Brookings officials failed to pay invoices promised by their counterpart at Aberdeen Municipal Airport! On January 1st 1971 - exactly 50 years after incorporation - Sioux Falls became a statutory city through an act passed by the State Legislature entitled "An Act To Incorporate The City Of Sioux Falls". On December 3rd 1984 – just shy of its centennial year - Mayor Josephine Kapp introduced Resolution No. 5998 designating January 1st each year since then "Sioux falls birthday". This resolution continues today as an official civic holiday celebrated annually on January 1st

This city would eventually be named after the Dakota tribe's leader, Sitting Bull. In 1886, South Dakota became a state and Sioux Falls became its capital. The city continued to grow as an agricultural center until World War II when it began to experience rapid growth as an industrial center. After the war, Sioux Falls experienced a period of decline and demolition until it regained its former identity as an arts and culture center in the 2000s.
