In the early 1800s, when Sioux Falls was a small frontier town, its citizens were avid hunters and warriors. So much so that the Sioux Falls military garrison was one of the only permanent establishments in the area. The first organized military unit in Sioux Falls was an artillery company, which disbanded in 1868. But by 1875, Sioux Falls had re-established itself as a major center of Indian Wars activity due to its strategic location on both sides of the Missouri River. The 1st Cavalry Regiment arrived at Sioux Falls on January 6, 1875 and shortly afterwards began operations against their Dakota enemies. The regiment's arrival coincided with a large influx of white settlers who had moved into what is now South Dakota from Nebraska during the mid-1870s. This population growth led to increased demand for land and resources within Indian Territory, which caused skirmishes between Sitting Bull's government forces and Ulysses S. Grant's army. In 1876, after months of fighting through rugged country west ofSioux City, Grant ordered his units to march back east towards Omaha where they would winter before advancing again in Springtime next year. But this time Sitting Bull didn't give up easily; he called upon his allies (the Lakota people) to help him fight off Grant's forces while he retreated deeper into Indian Territory. In what became known as The Great Famine, more than 3 million Indians died from hunger and cold while trying to escape forced relocation or capture by Ulysses S. Grant's army—a tragic event that has been studied ever since by historians interested in understanding how violence can lead to social unrest and conflict inside reservations).
