The base was home to the 316th Bombardment Squadron which operated B-17 Flying Fortress bombers. In 1951, the 316th moved to its current location and became the 319th Bombardment Squadron. The 318th Troop Carrier Squadron arrived in Sioux Falls from Okinawa during World War II and served as a unit of Ninth Air Force. The squadron flew Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter planes from Sioux Falls until its disbanding in 1946. The 319thBS moved to Japan on 1 March 1957 where it trained under MASAJI aircrews flown by U.S. Airmen aboard J-2F "Shark" aircraft. On 8 December 1958, the 319thBS received its first jet aircraft when it received Republic F-105 Thunderchiefs from North American Aviation for worldwide deployments Cruise Missile operations against targets in Southeast Asia during Operation Rolling Thunder III which ended on 5 January 1959. In 1961, the 319thBS became an all jet squadron when it received Boeing 707 jets for global deployment Cruise Missile operations against targets in Southeast Asia during Operation coordinated Defense I During this time period also, the squadron lost one wing due to accidents and others were exchanged or upgraded with different types of jets such as McDonnell Douglas DC3 76/100 Jetstream II's, Boeing 747C freighters and Boeing 727LT’s being replaced by Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules jumbo transports starting with deployment into Vietnam beginning 3 November 1965 until 15 May 1973; total duration was about 12 years flying over Indochina (Vietnam). On 20 October 1976, the 317TH TCS departed from Sioux Falls AFB after more than 60 years providing support services for USAF units around our state including 10 deployments to Saudi Arabia; total time was 9 months flying transport missions into Qatar Airways airspace transporting troops and supplies nearKuwait City while refueling USAF KC-135 Stratotankers enroute refuelling helicopter carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 78) conductingOperation Desert StormSimultaneously these flights were making a stop at Bahrain King Khalid International Airport enroute returning Kuwaiti forces late night form Bahrain back to Kuwait City During this time we also hosted visiting VIP's both military and civilian members of Congress their spouses First Lady Rosalynn Carter among others Ministerial delegations led by Admiral Zia ul Haq head of Pakistani Navy Commander Asif Jahangir Director General Directorate General Doordarshan TV channel Commandos Long Range Anti Tank Unit(LRAU)

Sioux Falls is the largest city in South Dakota and the second-largest municipality in Nebraska after Omaha. It lies on both sides of the Missouri River and its metropolitan area includes all of Douglas County and all but one part of Stephenson County. The first people to live in what is now Sioux Falls were Creeks who migrated from northern Canada during the early 18th century. The town was founded by residents of Dickinson City on August 15, 1899 as a result of a land claim filed by Howard Jealous against Pierre Aymond. Jealous had bought land east of Dickinson City from Aymond for $1,000 cash and sawed off a section of his own property into blocks that became known as "the square." On November 17, 1899, members of the Dickinson City Board voted unanimously to name their new town Sioux Falls because it was the site where General David Denny's cavalry had beendinkered while camping near present day downtown Sioux Falls on September 25 that year. The townsite was platted on December 1 by John Pemberton and Nelsons Wagon Road Company President Elisha Nichols withdrawn from service on December 3rd due to an outbreak of smallpox which killed over 50% of settlers within two weeks statewide!
