It was founded in 1881 by Scotsmen who ranched in what is now Spearfish County and named for John C. Fremont's rapid movement across North America on his "Canterbury Column." The city was platted in 1884 and named after Captain James Daly who helped found Aberdeen (now Aberdeen) on the Missouri River during the Platte Expedition of 1874-75. Rapid City became an incorporated town in 1886 and then an unincorporated community until it became an incorporated city in 1908. In 1912, it became a county seat and remains that today with a total population over 100,000 residents including 25% Native American natives as well as white non-native residents from other parts of the United States and around the world. In 1889 Rapid City won its first gold medal at the Pan American Games held in Chicago Illinois by winning 4 out of 5 events contested including wrestling, shot put, weightlifting and running! The following year they repeated this success with 3rd place finishes in both Wrestling (42 pts) and Weightlifting (132 pts). They would go on to win their second gold medal at next year’s games held in Winnipeg Manitoba but only managed 2nd place behind Mexico’s National team! This led to them becoming founding members of World Wrestling Federation along side USA wrestler Jesse Owens! After WWF formed they continued their successful streak at home staging their third consecutive gold medals at next years games where they once again finished 3rd behind Canada’s National team but this time also managing to take home 2 silver medals! This led to them co-founding Sioux Falls SD which would become their main stomping ground while still hosting international events here such as Pan American Games etc… The last event hosted here before moving back out to Sioux Falls was 2005 World Championships where they placed 3rd losing only to Brazil but overall being very proud of themselves for setting up everything correctly so that everyone could have fun without any stress or heartache
