In 1942, the Air Force decided to create a new branch of the military called the Flying Service. The Flying Service was created to provide support for Allied forces during World War II. The first airman assigned to the Flying Service was John L. Lewis. John Lewis was born in 1881 in Illinois and served with distinction in World War I as a lieutenant colonel. Afterward, Lewis worked as a research chemist and engineer at General Electric Company before being appointed assistant director of engineering at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio in 1938. In 1940, he became director of engineering at Wright-Patterson AFB and played an important role in developing aircraft fins and landing gear during World War II. In 1944, John Lewis retired from his position at Wright-Patterson AFB and moved to Rapid City, South Dakota where he founded Frontier Airlines Corporation. Frontier Airlines Corporation was one of the original airline companies formed by American President Franklin D. Roosevelt during his New Deal program. The purpose of Frontier Airlines Corporation was to offer service between major American cities and airports across numerous Western states including Nevada, Arizona, California, Wyoming and Montana on behalf of the government agencies which provided essential services such as communication linkages between these regions and Washington D.C.. After retiring from his job with Frontier Airlines Corporation, Lewis started two small airlines named Twin Cities Airways (TNA)and Great Northern Aviation (GNAL). Both airlines were based out of Sioux Falls Regional Airport near Sioux Falls, SD until they merged into Delta Air Lines on November 1st 1998 when both Twin Cities Airways subsidiaries were sold off along with their assets - TNA becoming Minneapolis/St Paul National Airport (MSP) while GNAL became Northwest Airlink LLC (NWA).
