Pierre, South Dakota is the smallest city in the Dakotas and its history dates back to 1881. The small town was founded by Danish farmers who arrived in what is now South Dakota on their way to build a new life. The farmers were looking for a place where they could raise crops, sell products, and make friends. They didn’t find what they were looking for until they moved to Pierre in 1881. The first business in Pierre was a store run by Ole Olsen. He sold goods such as soap and butter from his home. In 1903, the first post office was established in Pierre. It served mostly local customers until 1907 when the US Post Office Department moved to Rapid City, SD. In 1912, Pierre became the capital of South Dakota and was renamed after Denmark’s king at that time, Christian IX. By 1915, it had become an agricultural center with over 100 businesses located there including flour mills, meatpacking plants, cheese farms, lumber yards, grain elevators, breweries and other liquor stores. The First World War brought much hardship to rural South Dakota but also helped spawn many entrepreneurs who started new businesses during that time period including Hennepin Grain Elevator Co., Union Harvester Workshops and Wagon Wheel Lumber Mills Ltd.. During World War II (1939-1945), Pierre experienced some of its most active periods with both aerial bombing raids by United StatesAAF planes as well as Japanese naval attacks which destroyed many homes and killed many people. After the war ended in 1945 came a period of growth that included establishment of schools (includingPierre High School) as well as hospitals (including Memorial Hospital). Many veterans returned home during this time period bringing their skills and technology with them which led to numerous advances being made throughout downtown Pierre including completion of the first light bulb in 1948; installation of electric streetlights in 1951; opening of Prairie View A&M University in 1956; construction of Interstate 480 into downtownPierre; erection of the world’s largest concrete mast on top of Main Street on September 25th 1984 following approval from UNESCO about creating an outdoor advertising market using LEDs for marketing purposes

After declining again to 2,859 people at the 2010 census, Pierre's growth has slowed slightly since then with only 1% increase from 2000 to 2010. The economy of Pierre rests largely on agriculture with most residents working within local farms or restaurants that serve the town's citizens. Industries include a printing shop which manufactured documents for official use during World War I and World War II before being closed down; however, it reopened as an arts center after being taken over by the town government in 2009; there are also numerous small businesses that provide goods and services to their customers within the town limits.
