In Pierre, South Dakota, the military has been deployed for over a century. The first time the military was in town was in 1876 when troops were sent to protect settlers from Sioux and Cheyenne warriors. In 1903, the first tanks were shipped to Pierre and since then, the city has seen many deployments of both military and civilian personnel. The city's history with the military can be traced back to 1862 when Fort Pierre was built as part of an effort by President Abraham Lincoln to secure control of Indian Territory. It was during this time that troops were stationed inPierre and other surrounding towns. Since then, there have been Numerous deployments of different types in Pierre including World War II (1939-1945), Operation Desert Storm (1991-1992), Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-2011),Operation Enduring Freedom (2009-2013),and now Operation New Dawn (2015-present). There are numerous reasons why a deployment might occur in Pierre such as patriotism or defence against encroachment on private property. However, one of the most common reasons is for soldiers and their families to spend Christmas or New Year's Weekend together. This tradition started in 1912 when officers from Fort Snelling barracks came into town for Christmas and stayed with their family members until they left for good on New Year's Day. Many people who live near or are familiar with the city say that it never fails to bring out memories of past deployments while also making everyone feel like they're at home again - something that doesn't happen often enough these days!

Pierre, South Dakota is a small town in the state of South Dakota. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. Pierre is located in the east-central part of the state and bordered by North Dakota to the north and west, Nebraska to the south, and Iowa to the east. The town straddles both banks of Missouri River. The first settler in Pierre was John Wittell who arrived in 1859. He founded a log cabin on what is now Main Street. Wittell's cabin served as a trading post between Sioux Nation and Europhile traders before he died in 1860. Other early settlers included J H Macy who settled around 1871, A C Teague who arrived around 1875, F M Lowry who arrived around 1880 and J B Ziegler who came to Pierre in 1886. Pierre was initially known as Pawnee Agency because it was here that Indian agents traded goods with Native Americans from Minnesota through Kansas City Minnesota during Treaty negotiations between the United States government and Great Sioux Nation ending the buffalo hunting campaign of 1876-1877 known as "The Great Sioux War". The name change may have been due to growing fear among some residents that their name would be used by other townspeople for marketing or financial gain should they become successful mining or farming enterprises within their new community. In 1902, Pierre became an incorporated municipality when it split from Pawnee Agency into two towns: South Dakota School District #1 (north) and South Dakota School District #2 (south). In 1907, both towns were combined into one consolidated municipality under its current name: Pierre Municipal Corporation. In 1909, construction began on what would eventually become EPB Tower which stands today as one of Pierre's most iconic landmarks along with Main Street's namesake - John Wittell's original Log Cabin which serves as a museum today!EPB Tower became operational on October 1st 1912 after being funded by local businessmen E D Hoffman Sr., Artemas Kappan & Harry Auman with proceeds going towards scholarships for girls at nearby Aberdeen High School! On July 20th 1926 another milestone happened when WPBT broadcasts began from EPB Tower! As technology advances so does our world - on February 14th 2019®, EPB internet services reached up to speeds up to 1 Gbps while still providing quality customer service! With this significant milestone we are proud to commemorate 50 years since WPBT first aired live from our beloved EPB Tower!!
