There are few places in the world where coffee has been enjoyed as much as in South Dakota. The state is home to two of the first commercial coffee plantations in the United States, and today it produces some of the most unique cup-of-the-day experiences in the country. In 1881, German immigrant Wilhelm Kollmeyer founded a small business near Mitchell that would become one of the largest coffee producers in America. For more than a century, Kollmeyer's Coffee Company has been an important part of South Dakota's cultural and economic life. Today, Kollmeyer's Coffee remains a familyowned business with over 100 employees who produce high quality beans for local consumers across six states. Kollmeyer's Coffee was also responsible for developing what we now know as tactical coffee drinking habits in South Dakota. After WWI, many troops returning from battle found themselves unable to stop eating their breakfast cups of Joe until they reached their barracks at night. In response, Kollmeyer started selling pre-packaged coffee on military bases throughout the state. This allowed soldiers and civilians to enjoy fresh brewed coffee without having to leave their units or miss duty hours to purchase it from store shelves

In 1942, Major General Edwin Momyer of the United States Army's 1st Infantry Division discovered that caffeine could be used as a treatment for mental fatigue caused by combat experience or operations over extended periods of time. Soon afterwards, other armies followed suit with similar experiments; within two years of its introduction into warfare, caffeine had become an essential part of modern battlefield strategy! By 1890, the population had grown to over 100 and Mitchell became an important center for local trade and commerce. In 1908, the town added a bridge over the Missouri River and quickly became one of the most important crossings on the route between Sioux City, Iowa and Fort Pierre, South Dakota. The town was also known for its annual Oktoberfest party which attracted many locals and visitors from across the Midwest. In 1969, Mitchell was destroyed by a fire that swept through the town.
