It has been over a century since the United States Navy deployed gift bundles of munitions and supplies to help Great Britain during World War I. Some of these gifts may have remain in the military forces to this day, while others have passed down through family members or friends who continue to maintain relationships with the navy. This paper will focus on two particular gift histories from Mitchell, South Dakota. In 1915, Lieutenant Commander John Ewart donated a collection of rifles and shotguns to the naval base. The weapons were used by sailors as part of training and combat readiness. These gifts continued to be used until the end of World War II. In 1944, Commodore William Pyle donated an armored cruiser called USS Lexington (CV-2) to the navy for use in war against Japan. The ship was soon modified into a Gift Bundle Museum which still exists today. This history is reflective of how significant naval deployments are in our society today.

Mitchell, South Dakota is a small town in the Midwestern United States. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mitchell County. Mitchell was founded in 1876 by James A. Mitchell and his family. The site of the town was chosen because it had an ample supply of watermelons and other crops that could be grown near live steamboats on the Missouri River. The first post office was opened in Mitchell in 1877. In 1907, the town name was changed to Mitchell after Ulysses S. Grant, who served as President of the United States from 1881-1885 and then as Governor of South Dakota from 1889-1893. In 1970, a fire destroyed most of downtown Mitchell and forced many people to abandon their homes for fear they would become homeless again if firefighters were not available to help rebuild quickly. In 1990, when Interstate 30 bypassed Mitchell County altogether, much of downtown business became un possible due to lack of parking or access to highways that led into town proper. The current incarnation of downtown Mitchell began to take shape in 1992 when a group of local entrepreneurs purchased land off I-30 eastbound within walking distance of their original businesses and development plans for what would eventually become known as "The Landing." This area now has a variety stores, restaurants, bars and other attractions which offer limited but quality access outside those specific venues due primarily to its location on one major artery leading into town center - making it difficult or impossible for outsiders even with good intentions (e.g., tourists) even relatively short walks away from all sorts cultural experiences without departing significantly wealthier than when they arrived thanks largely (in part) to generous donations from supporters throughout 2016 through 2018 by various individuals including: Philanthropist Randolph Payne; Landlord John Pritzker IV; Casino Owner Sheldon Adelson; Businessman Craig Webber; Mayor Doug Wrightson

The town was named in honor of General George Armstrong Custer, who died in battle during the American Civil War.
