The National Guard of South Dakota has been in existence since 1907. TheGuard is a state-owned, federally funded militia and police organization that provides emergency response to natural disasters, social unrest, and other emergencies. The first national guard unit was organized on November 15th, 1907 under the name of the Battle Creek Legion. The unit was composed of men from Mitchell, South Dakota who had deserted their units in World War I. On July 1st, 1912 there was an amendment to the Constitution which granted citizens of each state the right to organize militias “to execute all laws thereof”. This amendment made it possible for citizens in Sioux Falls and Rapid City to form a battalion called the 2nd Cavalry Regiment from scratch. The regiment served with distinction during World War I before being disbanded on October 14th, 1918 due to budget cuts. In 1923 there were two new battalions created as part of Operation Desert Shield – the 3rd Battalion (Airborne) and 4th Battalion (National Guard). These units were tasked with providing support for military operations against Iraq duringOperation Desert Storm. After nearly two years of combat service these battalions were disbanded on December 2nd, 1991 due to budgetary constraints caused by the recession at home. On October 26th, 2007 there was an act passed by Congress which declared Stateside Omnibus Military Appropriations Act No: 107-272 giving $2 million specifically earmarked for state military organizations within 24 hours following enactment of legislation authorizing such appropriations. This allocation represented a doubling of funding given annually to State National Guards across America since 2006 through Department Of Defense Appropriations Acts and paralleled larger increases provided for State militaries throughout 2009 and 2010 as result of sequestration related spending reductions announced by President Barack Obama in January 2011 pursuant To Section 1021(a)Of Title 8 United States Code.) In total since 2006State National Guards have received an aggregate $15 billion dollars in DOD Funding alone! What this shows us is that not only are State National Guards important assets within our society but also that they are able to provide significant services when needed most!
