The population of Mitchell rapidly grew throughout its early years; by 1886 it had reached 1,500 residents. In 1902, the Union Pacific Railroad arrived in Mitchell and began construction of a line from Sioux City to Rapid City. To help finance this project, Congress passed a law authorizing railroad bonds. These bonds were sold nationwide and helped support the growth of towns like Omaha and Minneapolis. By 1910, Mitchell had a population of 4,000 people and was classified as a city by Iowa Department of State Gazetteer.
