A few years ago, I decided to move to Mitchell, South Dakota. I was a little lost at the time as there wasn’t much information about the coffee scene here. So, I started reading about it and stumbled upon an old blog post about a coffee bar called Artisan Coffee. The bar had been in business for over 20 years! It was my favorite discovery of that week and I knew that I had to check it out. Artisan Coffee is located on Main Street in Mitchell. The inside is very quaint and cozy with a lived-in feel. The baristas are all very knowledgable about their drinks and they seem to really enjoy what they do. They make sure that each drink is delicious! I went into Artisan Coffee and ordered a roast of Ethiopian Blue Dream coffee. It came out perfect and tasted great! The artisans were so friendly and welcoming which made the experience even more special. Overall, Artisan Coffee is an amazing place where you can find delicious coffee while spending some time chatting with friends or family members. The origins of artisan coffee can be traced back to the early days of coffee production. One of the first coffee roasters in America was James Fenton, who roasted beans for his family’s business, The Fenton Coffee Company, fromugar and filters at their home on Cherry Street in Boston. In 1876, John Moses Brown founded Moses Brown Coffee Company in Worcester, Massachusetts. The company produced a wide variety of Java and Italian blends as well as French press and drip coffee. By 1912, Moses Brown had moved its operations to Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. In 1915, Frank Eppleton established Eppleton Coffee Company in Lexington Avenue in New York City with a small batch roast operation that supplied local cafes throughout the city. In 1948, Harry Smith and his partners purchase Eppleton Coffee from Frank Eppleton and continued the factory production until it closed in 1984.
Mitchell is a small town in South Dakota that has been around since the early 1800s. The town was named after Captain John Mitchell, who was responsible for building the first stockade in the area. In 1878, the town passed away and was replaced by Council Bluffs. However, Mitchell continued to exist and eventually became a city in its own right. Mitchell’s history can be traced back to when it was founded as a place where traders could store their goods during wintertime. By 1892, Mitchell had become a small community with only 10 residents. However, due to its location on the Missouri River, Mitchell quickly became known as one of the most important and prosperous towns in South Dakota. In 1906, Mayor Charles Wiegand declared October 5th “John Fetterman Day” in honor of the founder of Union Pacific Railroad who had helped create Mitchell’s success story. Today, October 5th remains a local holiday which marks an event commemorating JFetterman’s contributions to this small town. In addition to John Fetterman Day, Mitchell hosts several other events each year including an outdoor art show called “The Gallery at Town Hall” and annual fall Festival which features music, food and vendor booths from throughouttown
