The Mitchell Army Depot is home to over 350 active and retired military personnel who support the local economy through their service in the United States Armed Forces. The depot has a rich history that dates back to 1916, when it was founded as the army's first ammunition depot in South Dakota. It quickly became one of the most important armament-manufacturing centers in the US, and its products were used by both sides during World War I and World War II. In recent years, however, the Depot has been largely neglected, with only a few small businesses located within its boundaries. However, this is about to change; thanks to an agreement between the Depot's owners and the government of South Dakota, Mitchell will soon become home to one of America's largest military museums. The Mitchell Museum of Art was founded in 1978 as part of a larger effort by then-Governor Dennis Daugaard to improve education opportunities for South Dakotans. This initiative led to the creation of several new art galleries across Sioux Falls and Rapid City throughoutSouth Dakota. Over time, these venues have helped promote contemporary art withinSouth Dakota while also educating students aboutthe historyofartinAmerica. In 2006, Governor Mike Rounds announced his intentionto createaMilitary museum atMitchell Army Depot. The museum would be sponsored by South Dakota Tourism Authorityand built on land donated by Depot owner Don Wirthman Sr.. The project faced many challengesbut ultimately succeededinprovidinganenjoyableexperiencefor visitorstoMitchellArmyDepot。 Today, Mitchell Army Depot is home to one of America’s largest military museums – containing more than 2 million square feet of exhibit space on five floors – as well as several smaller museums that focus on specific branches or periodsof Americanhistory.
