Air Force Deployed Gift History in Mitchell, South Dakota began on December 15th, 1953 when the Air Force moved its headquarters from Dayton to Mitchell. The decision was made to move the Headquarters because of strong support for Baseend's economy which was growing rapidly. In the early years of Baseend, many residents contributed their time and money to help with the cost of moving Headquarters. This generosity continued until 1957 when Headquarters moved again due to changes in Defense policy. In 1955, Air Force personnel who had served in Japan came back home and were assigned to stationed at Tinker Air Force Base. They brought with them a lot of souvenirs they had collected while there. One such gift was an American-made Kawa electric lawn mower that cost $795.00 new! This gift helped give some local farmers a start in their businesses and has been around ever since! In 1961, Baseend’s first air force detachment arrived at MacDill AFB. This detachment consisted of three F-84 Thunderjet fighter jets and two KC-135 Stratotankers. These aircraft were used for training maneuvers over Tampa Bay Naval Station during 1961-1963 as part of Operation Neptune's Spear which aimed to stop North Korea from launching missiles into Florida! As part of this operation, all members of the detachment are enshrined at The USS MacDill Museum located on MacArthur Boulevard near US 1A (the old route US 1 took). In 1966, baseEND celebrated its 50th anniversary and decided it would be better if everyone gathered together for a big game night celebration! A large tent was erected on Main Street next door to The Sportsman’s Lodge where everyone could have dinner before playing cards or watching television all night long! It is interesting to note that this event still occurs every year without fail and benefits local charities!!

Mitchell, South Dakota is a small town in the United States. The population was 577 at the 2010 census. It lies in the northwest corner of South Dakota and is bordered by North Dakota to the east, Iowa to the south, and Nebraska to the west. The eastern edge of Mitchell borders Sioux County, North Dakota. Mitchell's history began with settlers arriving in 1872. In 1907, Mitchell became a city. In 1951, it became a state capital. It has since been turned into an agricultural community with a largely rural population that relies on agriculture for jobs and income. Agriculture is also Mitchell's primary source of revenue and social support. The area now known as Mitchell was first occupied by hunting-gathering cultures dating back to 10,000 years ago. The first Europeans arrived in what is now South Dakota about 1840 when traders from Minnesota founded Fort Pierre on the Missouri River near present day Winnipeg, Manitoba Territory. After French traders acquired control of this territory from British colonists in 1804 they started trading with Indian groups along the upper Missouri River and until 1807 these traders were mostly American fur trappers who traded goods such as furs for guns, ammunition and other items used by Native Americans including horses, dogs and Chief Joseph's Franz von Steuben's artillery piece captured during his unsuccessful attempt to conquer Canada in 1794 known as "the Yellow Dog". In 1807 Lieutenant Colonel John Custer led an army numbering approximately 4500 men against the Sioux Indians located northeast of present day Sioux Falls on peninsular Lake Sakakawea which he named after his mother goddess Athena—further north lay Currie’s Missionary District where General James Halleck had established supply posts for General Pierre’s army before its march across ribbons towards Fort Snelling on July 6th 1809 (then called Pine Ridge) leading upriver Towanda Agency due east from Council Bluffs where Buffaloes had recently been introduced following their successful winter campaign against unyielding Blackfeet tribespeople about two miles away), some distance upstream from current day Mitchell but immediately downstream from modern day Spooner City within today’s Spearfish County limits just past junction of US Highway 83 & ND Highway 20 antikerchief country road while mission buildings still stand within present day Spearfish County boundaries lieutenant colonel john custer
The United States Air Force (USAF) is a branch of the U.S. military that has its origins in World War I, when the Army and Navy were combined to form the American Expeditionary Forces In 1947, with the creation of NATO, USAF was transferred from the Department of Commerce to the newly created Department of Defense. As part of this transition, all air force units were redesignated as wings within their respective departments. The 1st Wing at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio became known as The Blue Angels and simultaneously activated first at Love Field in Dallas/Fort Worth Texas on May 10th 1948 under command of Colonel James E. "Jimmy" Hodges According to the history section on USAF website: "The 1st Wing changed its name from The Blue Angels to The USAF Thunderbirds on March 15th 1980 after reaching top performance levels achieved by other wings during their successful yearlong competition." In 2006, it was announced that LtCol Christopher Pappas would be taking over as Commander for 1st Wing operations effective September 1st 2006.Lt Col Christopher Pappas is also an accomplished fighter pilot and combat controller having served as an instructor for both helicopter pilots and jet fighters in a variety of air forces around the world including providing instruction for Lockheed Martin F-15 Eagle fighter jets at Edwards AFB CA

Mitchell was founded in 1861 by Captain John Mitchell and his brother, Samuel. The town was named after Captain Mitchell's birthplace, Menominee County, Michigan. The first post office was established in Mitchell on December 21, 1861. The town had a population of only 10 people when it incorporated as a village on April 4, 1872. The first female mayor of Mitchell was Mrs. Sallie Harding in 1971. The early days of the city were difficult due to lack of water and transportation options. However, over time the city developed into an important center for trade and commerce with its location at the crossroads of two major wagon routes. In 1907, Mitchell became one of the first cities in South Dakota to receive municipal services through electric lighting and street cleaning brought about by Andrew Carnegie Boulevard Extension Project
