The modern navy gift history began with the adoption of the submarine in World War I. Submarines were a new and powerful means of warfare, and they quickly became popular gifts for naval officers and their families. The early submariners who donated their time and expertise to the navy were honored by induction into the Naval Academy’s Class of 1922. After America entered World War II, submarines continued to be popular gifts, as they provided an efficient way to attack enemy ships. New technology also contributed to this trend: submarines could now travel long distances without being refueled, which made them ideal for reconnaissance missions deep inside enemy territory. In 1953, submersibles were finally accepted into the United States military as standard equipment on warships, marking a new era in naval gift history. Today, submariners continue to play an important role in American defense policy by donating their skills and knowledge to various organizations around the world.
