On December 8, 1893, USS Constitution (1881-1893) capsized while sailing off Point Conception Island in San Francisco Bay resulting in the death of all 173 passengers and crew members aboard. Huron, South Dakota is a small town located in Webster County, South Dakota. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous small town in Webster County and the second most populous community in South Dakota after Sioux Falls. The name Huron comes from a Ojibwe word meaning "the great water" or "the Great Lakes." The first settler in Huron was David Harsdorf who arrived on horseback in 1876. By 1880, there were nine families living in Huron. In 1902, the United States government bought land near present-day Huron and began to settlers by tearing down sod hills and laying out streets. A post office was established at what is now Huron in 1903, and mail was brought to Hurontown from Sioux City daily until 1959 when service was discontinued because of high postage rates. In 1907, an oil well finally opened up within sight of where present-day HurON stands and soon production became essential for local farmers as well as for travel to various wells throughout southern South Dakota. The town started becoming known as the Hub of Oil Country due to thisoil activity which continued until shortly before World War II when production switched to natural gas exploitation due to discovery across the state line with Nebraska

Nine sailors were killed and one rescued before she finally capsized on 18 October 1974 near Diego Garcia in Arabian Sea with 4136 passengers, crew and security personnel onboard including some high-ranking members of the Royal Saudi Navy who had been allowed to disembark their ships earlier that day for unknown reasons
