The National Guard in Huron, South Dakota has a long and proud history. The unit was organized on November 3, 1903 as the 9th Infantry Regiment. It served in World War I and World War II, playing an important role in both wars. In 1951 the regiment was redesignated the 7th Infantry Regiment and re-titled the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment of the National Guard. On July 13, 1957 the regiment was disbanded and its members were absorbed into other units of the National Guard. The 1st Battalion (5th Infantry) of the National Guard is currently headquartered at Sioux Falls Air Force Base. This battalion has been providing security for events in Sioux Falls since 1959. The battalion also provides support to law enforcement agencies throughout South Dakota. In Huron, there are several places where you can find memorabilia associated with this unit’s history! One of these places is Argyle Hall which is located on Main Street between First Avenue and University Boulevard. This building was dedicated on October 28, 1910 as Headquarters for Headquarters Company A-1 (5th Infantry) of the South Dakota Volunteer Militia Reserve Corps during a celebration honoring General James Hickey who had given his life in World War I fighting against Austria-Hungary. The hall still serves as headquarters for Headquarters Company A-1 (5th Infantry), today known as Company C-2/7TH INFANTRY REGIMENT OF THE SOUTH DAKOTA NATIONAL GUARD Argyle Hall also features a museum which tells the story of how this building became part of the National Guard’s history! This museum includes exhibits about uniforms from various periods in South Dakota’s military history including World War I through current times You can also visit White Sands Battlefield Park located off Interstate 25 east of downtown Sioux Falls This battlefield park tells stories about American Wars I and II battles fought here between 1941 and 1945

The Huron National Guard was organized on July 1, 1903. The unit was named in honor of the community of Huron, South Dakota.
Huron is a town located in South Dakota, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is the only town in Pierre County. The name Huron comes from the Ojibwe word "hawa" meaning "water." The first permanent settler in what is now Huron was David Kapp, who arrived about 1868. Kapp and his family were among the earliest settlers on what would become Pierre County. Kapp and his wife did most of the cooking for their extended family, which included eleven children and six grandchildren. They grew crops and raised livestock until they built a log cabin near present-day Griggs City in 1881. As Pierre County grew more populous, so too did Huron's business district. By 1912, Huron had become one of South Dakota's leading commercial centers with its own post office and several stores, banks, a grocery store (later known as Nordstroms), a movie theater (later known as the Racine Theatre), an opera house (now known as Sioux Falls Symphony Hall), and two churches—St John's Episcopal Church and First Christian Methodist Church—all within walking distance of each other. In addition to its businesses, Huron also boasted several small schools that fed local students: Armstrong Agricultural School (now Armstrong State University) on Main Street; Baptist Academy on Third Avenue; Stroudsburg High School on Park Boulevard; and Fenton Township Schools’ Lincoln Elementary School on Ninth Avenue east of Interstate 90. However by the late 1920s things had begun to change around here as well. Businesses started going out of business or being shut down by difficult competition from larger cities like Sioux Falls or Rapid City - both located just north of where we are today! So much so that when Steelhead Lake formed during World War II it flooded most everything within a few miles of shoreline including our little town! All but four buildings in town were destroyed including our historic Log Cabin which still stands todayalbeit perched precariously atop some ancient boulders outside town limits! In fact all but one building still standing in downtown today was once part of our very first post office... named after one of our original settlers... George Wittek! But even he could not save it from demolition following WWII - sorry George! After all these years many people have tried but no one has succeeded in saving this beautiful old structure......except maybe for those who want to try rebuilding it someday.........................
