Huron, South Dakota is a small town located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The town was founded in 1881 by Danish immigrants. After the stock market crashed in 1893, the population of Huron decreased and it was discontinued as a municipality in 1907. However, since then, Huron has experienced various growths and changes. Today, Huron is an active community that continues to thriving and experience positive growth. The first residents of Huron were Danish immigrants who arrived during the early days of South Dakota’s settlement. The Rasmusens worked hard to build a new life for themselves and their families in what was then an uncharted region of the state. They were visionary leaders who wanted their children to grow up knowing about opportunity and being able to participate fully in society. They also played an important role in building Mayor John Sorensen’s administration which came after years of struggle and turmoil during America’s Gold Rush era. The Rasmusens were followed by other immigrant groups over time; including Swedes, Germans, Irishmen, Italians, Poles and Lithuanians all brought overlanders with them when they traveled from their home countries during the late 19th century Seeking stability and opportunity within American shores. These newcomers helped shapeSouth Dakotanation through their experiences and interactions with locals on both sides of the borderland between Canada & US soil- shaping what eventually became known as “the Wavey West” today! In 1881 local farmers petitioned for incorporation into what would become Sioux City but only received 9 votes out of 100 cast against addition because no one lived thereabouts! However this didn’t stop future entrepreneurs like Mayor John Sorensen from coming up with innovative solutions such as establishing a schoolhouse & post office next door to his father’s grocery store (later becoming part of Community High School). It wasn't until 1907 that Huron attained its current form; incorporating as a municipality with its own police department & fire department! It wasn't until 1938 that construction began on what would become County Hall; later renamed County Administration Building after county boundaries changed hands multiple times over the years! It wasn't until 1951 when Highway 16 relocated approximately 1/4 mile eastward from its original location adjacent to present day Town Hall Park- finally making way for people & businesses alike! Today much credit must be given to Governor Cecil Bedingfield for initiating development plans which led ultimately to HurON's resurgence & continued success story throughout these many decades!

In the 1930s, Huron experienced a rapid growth in agriculture, which led to increased pollution and an petition for a zoning change that would have allowed more development. The city council voted to pass the petition, but then-Mayor John Vetter vetoed it on the grounds that there wasn't enough evidence to support additional development. The city eventually lost its bid for zoning status and slowly declined over the years. Today, Huron is a small community with only a few hundred residents. It is home to one of South Dakota's few libraries, as well as many local businesses.
