Brookings, South Dakota is a town in Union County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. Brookings is the county seat of Union County. Brookings was founded by a group of settlers who came to the area in 1881. The first post office in Brookings opened in 1883. The community was named for John Fenton Brooks, an American lawyer and politician from Illinois who served as a U.S. Senator from Iowa from 1907 to 1913 and as Secretary of War under Woodrow Wilson during World War I. Brooks also helped found what is now the University of Sioux Falls in Brookings in 1941. Brookings is located at (43.705694,-96.566667). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census[1] of 2010, there were 1,691 people residing in Brookings Townships: 584 households (58%), 506 families (41%), and 158 non-families (14%). The racial makeup of Brookings Townships was 97% White and 2% Native American or Alaska Native; 0% black or African American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 2% from other races; and 3%from two or more races.[2] Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 4%. In terms of ancestry, 43% were English/Caucasian, 24% Irish/Scottish-British Isles descent, 11% German/Austrian complex, 8% Italian/Piedmontese descent, 7% Scandinavian descent,[3] 6%, Polish background 5%, Dutch background 2%, Swiss background 1%,[4] and one percent Native American ancestry.[5][6]
Since the early days of marine forces, they have been a key part of many countries’ military. In fact, marines are one of the oldest and most well-known branches of service in the armed forces. They have played an important role in every country that has had them, and continue to do so today. The marines were first deployed abroad in World War I as part of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF). This was a major conflict where America fought on both sides. The marines were very successful in their mission and returned home with several medals and awards. From then on, they were regularly sent to war zones around the world. In World War II, marines again proved themselves as professionals by serving in both campaigns against Japan as well as fighting at Guadalcanal and Okinawa. They also received numerous commendations for their work during these difficult times. After World War II ended, marines continued to serve in many different capacities throughout the years until their current role within our military was created by Congress in 1969. Today, marine forces play an important role within our military by providing support for commanders on all levels from ashore to afloat. They provide intelligence and surveillance capabilities; keep our troops safe; act as backup for other elements when needed; take care of wounded Marines and sailors; provide housing and food services to units stationed overseas; patrol our coasts and waters; respond to natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes; conduct peacekeeping operations around the world….and more!

The Brookings community has been in existence since 1881. The first settler in the area, Abram H. Fetterman, founded a small farm on what is now the corner of Third and Seventh Streets in 1881. The town was named after General George Washington Carver, who donated land to it in 1913. During the early years of Brookings’existence, many businesses were established within its boundaries- such as a grocery store, barber shop, livery stable, and school. However, as time passed and more people moved into the area, several businesses closed or changed hands- leaving Brookings with only two remaining businesses in 1978 when it lost its zoning designation as a town. Since then, business owners have rebuilt and reopened several of Brookings’ original businesses including an antique store and restaurant known as “The Gables” which remain open today. Additionally, the city has had a number of new restaurants opened up such as “Pizza Place” and “Asian Express” which have helped make Brookings one of South Dakota's most popular tourist destinations for food lovers. Brookings also boasts numerous cultural endeavors which include art galleries (including onededer Gallery), museums (such as the South Dakota State Capitol Museum), theatre productions (including annual shows at South Dakota University Fairbanks), music festivals (such as the Sioux Falls Jazz Festival) and more!
The Brookings area was settled in 1854 by James W. Harriman and his wife, Lucy. The first post office was established at Brookings in 1857. In 1861, the Union army occupied Fort Pierre and burned all of the town's buildings including the courthouse. The Sioux Indians destroyed much of the town during their offensive against white settlers in 1862. On November 25, 1865, United States President Abraham Lincoln signed a bill creating South Dakota from parts of Minnesota and North Dakota, making it a Territory of Kansas. The new state had an initial population of just over 2,000 residents. By 1870, however, South Dakota had more than 12,500 residents and became one of the most populous states in the Union.
