The United States Air Force (USAF) has a long and proud history of deploying gifts to friends and family in many parts of the world. From military hardware to decorations, these deployments have been a means for USAF members to show their support for their allies and friends around the world. One of the most famous deployment stories is that of the Red Arrow Squadron, which was activated in 1951 as an unarmed aerial reconnaissance squadron. After years serving as part of USAF Special Forces units and providing valuable reconnaissance data, it was decided that the squadron should be deployed with other branches of the military to Yugoslavia in support of NATO air operations during World War II. The Red Arrow Squadron flew its first mission on September 8th, 1945, when they were deployed from RAF Bognor Regis in England with fighter aircraft and bombers to participate in Operation Overlord. They served consecutively until May 1949 when they joined Seventh Air Force stationed at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. During this time period there were also numerous deployments by USAF units both overseas and domestically to deal with various issues such as Korean War conflict; Persian Gulf War; Operation Desert Storm; Hurricane Katrina; and Long Beach earthquake relief efforts. Today’s USAF provides global response capability through multiple missions including Global Hawk Surveillance Aircraft operated by the Army National Guard Presidential Unit Citation Program detachment located at Davis-Monthan AFB AZ; overwatch flights over Iraq during ISIS advances into Mosul region (7/9/15); flying tanker patrols off California Coast (2/27/16). These deployments not only serve our country but also make our community partners feel like we are always there for them no matter what – something that cannot be found anywhere else!

On July 5, 1919, the United States Air Force was activated via an act of Congress. The USAF consisted of a cadre of cadets from various military branches who were given their initial training at Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio. On October 1, 1949, the USAF became an operational organization and on December 15th, 1951 the first commando unit was created named The Flying Tigers. In 1966, Headquarters Air Forces (HQ AF) was relocate to Brooks AFB in South Dakota as part of the Base Realignment and Closure process. HQ AF moved from Langley AFB Virginia to Brooks AFB with its subordinate commands being redistributed among other bases in South Dakota. On November 15th 1997 HeadquartersAir Forces relocated again when it became components of Aerospace Command under Joint Chiefs Chairman Donald Rumsfeld. On May 10th 2006 HeadquartersAir Forces announced that it would be retiring all its fighter aircraft by 2010 effective with the last F-15E left delivered on September 30th 2008 at McConnell Air Force Base Kansas City Missouri under Operation Golden Eagle which also saw the retirement of all A-10 Warthogs stationed at Eglin AFB Florida and Fort Worth Airpark Texas.
The Brookings Institution is a research institution located in Washington, D.C., and has been providing nonpartisan advice to the government of South Dakota since its establishment in 1865. The institution was founded by former U.S. Congressman John A. Campbell, who served as its first president from 1927 to 1934 and again from 1945 to 1951. The current president and CEO of the Brookings Institution is Damon Brown, who was appointed in October 2017 after serving as the executive vice president for policy at the National Security Council under President Donald Trump. Brookings is one of the most highly respected think tanks in America and its mission is “to promote political, economic, social and environmental innovation through rigorous research and public education.” Informed opinion shaping can be found at Brookings across a wide range of topics including international relations, economics, national security, federalism, civil rights issues, women’s issues, immigration reform and more. South Dakota has been an integral part of Brookings’s mission for over 150 years – playing host to many top scholars during that time including Reinhold Niebuhr (1927-1958), Talcott Parsons (1928-1985), Albert Bandura (1959-1986) and James Q Wilson (1963-1999). Many well known South Dakotans have also had their careers advanced at Brookings thanks to fellowships or appointments such as Alice Paul (1920-1992) or Vernon Jordan Jr.(1966-1993). Today there are over 100 individuals working at Brookings across a variety of disciplines with an extensive impact on American public life - making it one of America’s leading research institutions when it comes to policymaking!
The United States Air Force has been deploying gift history since World War II. The USAF has sent more than $3 billion in gifts to friends and allies since the end of World War II. These gifts have included items such as weapons, munitions, vehicles, aircraft, and technology. One of the most famous Air Force deployments was a Christmas present to Fidel Castro in 1959. This gift was an F-111A fighter jet that had been donated by North American Aviation. The plane arrived at Cuban airfields on December 25th and was given to Fidel by General Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, Jr., who had flown it during the Apollo 11 mission.
In 1947, the USAF deployed the Gift of Love parcel program to distribute handmade ornaments and gifts to military families. The program continued until 1972.
