Aberdeen, South Dakota is a small town located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The population was 789 at the 2010 census, down from 823 at the 2000 census. Aberdeen is part of Rapid City, and is bordered by the states of Nebraska to the north and Iowa to the east. Aberdeen's origins date back to 1884 when a group of farmers led by Lyman Rockefeller donated land in what is now Aberdeen for a new town site. The name "Aberdeen" originated with an Indian word meaning “blanketing place” or “shrine” due to its location on bluffs overlooking a large body of water that served as both a source of drinking water and testing ground for cattle and other livestock. In 1907, Aberdeen became one of eight cities in South Dakota incorporated under the new state constitution. The city's first mayor was John Hargrave who served from 1907-1915; he was succeeded by Wm J P Harrison until 1941 when he died suddenly at age 70 years old leaving behind two terms as mayor which were then held jointly by his son Harry Harrison Jr., who continued until his death in 1975 and wife Eleanor Harrison until 1982; hereafter known as Mrs. Harrison presided over Aberdeen during her father's lifetime (1975-1982). During Mrs. Harrison's tenure, several landmark projects were completed including construction of city hall which opened on November 12th, 1978; improvement/renovation of local schools including installation of air conditioning; demolition/installation of five municipal buildings including jail and library; establishment/operation of Aberdeen Park District which included parkland along Main Street between Fourth Avenue and Sixth Avenue) As Mayor Harry Harrison Sr.'s last act before leaving office he also directed that all street names ending with "-rude" be changed to "-garden" beginning with Third Avenue southward through downtown Aberdeen
