However, until about 1830 most residents lived along the river banks near where they worked fishing and farming; later they moved into new development eastward along 1st Street between 12th and 14th Streets NW., which became known as "The Brick Row." In 1831 James Fenton purchased 6 acres (2 ha) northeast of present-day West Columbia from Isaac Brockman for $50 USD; he named it "Fenton's Bluff" in honor of James Fenton's older brother-in-law Daniel Boone II who had helped him purchase land some time earlier at an initial cost of $10 USD per acre ($2 million today). Eaton developed this site into what is now downtown WestColumbia which he called "Eaton's Town." In 1836 Elijah Broughton bought 4 acres (1 ha) northeast of present day Downtown from Eaton for $25USD; he renamed it "Broughton's Creek". This location would come to be known as Broughton Heights before becoming part of downtown WestColumbia proper after Elijah Broughton sold his interest in 1790 to James Kappelman for $1USD (). The first block west on Broad Street NW., between 11th and 12th Streets NW., becameknown as Kappelman Square after Elijah Broughton sold his interest to him in 1790
