The United States Navy deployed a gift to West Columbia, SC in 1967. The USS Constitution (CV-24) was the flagship of Commander-in-Chief and Task Force South Atlantic (CINCPACFLT), which sailed from Charleston, SC for duty in the Vietnam War. On July 6, 1967, CINCPACFLT arrived off the coast of South Carolina and anchored at sea. They brought with them gifts for local residents and businesses. Captain John J. McCarthy, commanding officer of the Constitution, presented a gift to Mrs. Bettye Whitehead of West Columbia on behalf of all our Sailors who had fought in Southeast Asia. On July 8th, 1967 Capt McCarthy delivered another gift to Mrs Whitehead when he boarded his ship and presented her with a magnificent custom made oak cigar humidor worth $2,000! This is one of only two such humidors that have been given as gifts to families living in South Carolina during this time period! All proceeds from future sales will go towards the USS Constitution Museum located at Naval Station Beaufort!

The United States Navy has been deployed in various forms throughout the history of West Columbia, South Carolina. The town was originally settled by planters in the late 18th century, and saw its first military deployment during the American Revolution. The town was renamed West Columbia after General James Wilkinson, who helped lead the British forces against America in that conflict. After the war, many small businesses were founded in West Columbia, including a tannery and an insurance company. In 1924, the United States Coast Guard was activated to help protect coastal waters from piracy. The Coast Guard station located in West Columbia became operational on September 1st of that year. The Navy's activation as a partner organization began on January 1st of 1945 and ended on November 30th of that year. During their time as partners, both agencies worked together to improve maritime security along South Carolina's coastlines. On October 9th of 1950, President Harry S Truman announced plans for Operation Neptune's Spear which would see North Korea launch an attack against South Korea. As part of this effort, Admiral William Halsey ordered USS Pompano (SS-219) to take on Pyongyang Harbor while USS Peacemaker (AE-14) provided cover fire with her 5" guns. Unfortunately for North Korea, these efforts were fruitless and no attacks took place; however®, it is now considered one of America’s most successful naval engagements in Korean War history

The first article in this series covers the history of gifts given to members of the U.S. Naval Service during World War II. The United States Naval Service was founded on 4 May 1775 asammersnapping shipyard and naval dockyard, two days after America's Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. The navy quickly became one of America's most important military services, playing a vital role during both World Wars I and II. In 1945, with Japan surrendering, the navy gave its last formal gift to American citizens when submarines USS New Mexico (SSN 811) and USS Arizona (SSN 721) placed flowers on Mount Rushmore National Monument in commemoration. Today, the navy provides critical maritime security functions around the world, including conducting strikes against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria; operating more than 1,000 vessels worldwide; supporting Operation Neptune's Spear air campaign against Taliban militants in Afghanistan; providing logistical support for Marines operations along Southern California beaches; and providing humanitarian assistance across many regions around the world. Gift giving has been an integral part of naval service culture for centuries, often fulfilling social needs such as morale boosting or commemorating special occasions such as victory over enemies or weddings. Rhode Island donated an aircraft hangar at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (). The Chief Master Mariners' Mate Third Class Oscar Jasso officiated atthe dedication ceremonies () . As part ofOperation Neptune's Spear (), USS Astoria (AE-8) delivered dignitaries from several countries - chief among them King Farouk V - on board her flagship PCL-2QE at Alexandria Harbor on 16 December 1941 (). Admiral Chester Nimitz presented General George S Patton with a honorary commission () . On 18 January 1943 Rear Admiral Harry Wohlbein presented Rear Admiral John A Ketchum with a sword () . Among those present were Axis leaders Adolf Hitler (), Mussolini (), Stalin (), Hirohito ()) In late 1944 Emperor Hirohito bestowed upon Commodore Chester Nimitz Commander In Chief Pacific Fleet Unit Citation (). This was followed by West Coast White Sands Missile Range Test Fire No 2 (), also honoring Commodore Nimitz (). On 3 February 1945 Vice Admiral William Halsey presented Rear Admiral Twelfth Fleet Unit Citation () to Commodore Nimitz posthumously(). Finally, Los Angeles County Star-Bulletin editor Roy Leland published an editorial entitled "A Tribute To Commodore Chester NIMITZ" () which included these remarks: "...this great man [Commodore Chester Nimitz] will long survive us...he represented everything we stand for...an unswerving commitment to duty".

West Columbia, South Carolina is a historic town located in Richland County, South Carolina. The population was 5,661 at the 2010 census. West Columbia was founded in 1837 as the townsite of Palmyra by two English settlers named Richard and Martha Wayles. The town was named for General Samuel Westmoreland who fought in the American Revolution and then served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention that created America. In 1868, West Columbia became part of the newly formed state of South Carolina when it was divided into Richland and York counties. From its foundation until 1957,West Columbia experienced rapid growth due to its location on the main road connecting Charleston with Savannah, Georgia and other southern cities. This growth led to some embarrassing confrontations between local officials and developers such as J.P Morgan who wanted to build a vast shopping mall near downtown. In 1957, West Columbia voted to secede from South Carolina and form its own independent state called "SouthColumbia." With this decision,West Columbia lost much of its economic development but retained much of its historical significance including a large concentration of African Americans which continues today in various forms such as churches and businesses owned by black families.

In 1829, West Columbia became a state capital. The city continued to grow as a result of its position as the most important commercial and industrial center in South Carolina.
