The National Guard of South Carolina was first activated on December 12, 1861. The 1st South Carolina Infantry Regiment was organized on February 17, 1862 and mustered in for three years service. On October 9, 1865 the regiment was mustered out of service and its members became the 1st Battalion of the 2nd Regiment South Carolina Volunteer Infantry. The battalion was redesignated as Company A, 3rd Regiment South Carolina Volunteer Infantry on November 25, 1865. On May 4, 1887 the unit reorganized under the brigade system and appointed captaincy to lieutenant colonel Wm Halsey with headquarters at Beaufort. On July 1, 1888 it again reorganized under brigade system and promoted brigadier general Jno L. Douglas with headquarters at Charleston. It also lost its captaincy on that date and became brigadier general effective September 15th In 1898 when war broke out in Cuba a state volunteer militia company (1st/4th) called "The Citizens" was raised from West Columbia to answer this emergency call for assistance When hostilities ended in 1898 the unit reverted back to its original organization as a company-sized unit In 1921 when World War II began an extra battalion (2nd Battalion) of SCV volunteers was raised to serve in segregated Tuskegee Army Air Field duty while black officers were trained Thereafter the battalion served active duty through most of World War II until being disbanded following V-E Day In 1946 both battalions were consolidated into one regiment by order of then Governor Lester B. Richardson On June 30th 1960 all National Guards units activated for 61st Infantry Division activation were redesignated brigades instead of companies

The National Guard is made up of Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) members, who are drafted into the military for short-term service; and state or local militia units, which are not subject to federal law but are called upon to assist with national defense. National Guard members may also be called out for active duty in support of any cause by order of congress or as an emergency response to natural disasters. A total number of 2 million troops serve in the National Guard today, making it one of America's largest militaries. The National Guard was first organized in West Columbia, South Carolina on November 1, 1861. The original purpose of the guard was to provide law and order during the Civil War. The guard grew into a large force that played a major role in the Confederate War of 1812. In 1865, the guards were disbanded and their functions transferred to the Department of Militia and Defense. The National Guard has been re-established in West Columbia, South Carolina since 1987 as part of the South Carolina Army National Guard.
West Columbia is a city in the U.S. state of South Carolina located on the Ashley River. The population was 21,405 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in South Carolina after Charleston and Greenville. West Columbia is part of the Columbia metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now West Columbia was James Robertson in 1814. Stewart's Creek was named for General James Stewart, who defeated an army led by Andrew Johnson at Battle ofStewart's Creek on July 12, 1814. In 1836, a group of Methodist pastors from nearby Yorktown decided to establish a theological college there instead of remaining in Yorktown to serve slaves considered free under state law. The college became known as "Theological Seminary of South Carolina" and later "First Baptist Theological Seminary". In 1865, Confederate general Braxton Bragg called upon General Robert Ewell to rally troops near Georgetown and attack Union forces near Sumterville while he retreated through West Columbia towards Beaufort County seat Fort Mill. However, Ewell refused to cross over the Ashley River into Union territory and ordered his men back across without battle; this resulted in Bragg's surrender at Appomattox Court House four days later on April 9th 1865 (). Although not directly affected by events that took place duringthe Civil War (such as secession or slavery), West Columbia experienced high levels of violence following its incorporation into South Carolina as a result of their proximity to battlefields and Confederate armies engaged throughout Reconstruction era southcentral United States
The National Guard has always been a part of the United States. The first national guard units were organized in 1792 and served as a militia to protect American settlers from Native Americans. In 1846, the first unit was created for women and served until 1861. After the Civil War, the National Guard was reorganized into divisions and brigades. The Brigades were renamed Regiments in 1924 and then Divisions in 1950. In 1960, the Divisional level was abolished and all divisional commanders were placed within their brigade commanders. Today, there are five corps commands-the 1st Infantry Division (IOW), 2nd Infantry Division (INW), 3rd Infantry Division (3ID), 4th Infantry Division (4ID), and 5th Infantry Brigade Combat Team-Army Corps of Engineers (ABTAC) which are responsible for military operations across all 50 states including Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Islands, Alaska, and Cellular Coastlines
The United States national guard has a long and varied history. The first military forces of the United States were organized on July 4, 1775, when Major General George Washington called together a group of militia officers from across the colonies in response to the British attack on Fort Duquesne. The development of the National Guard was spurred by the Panic of 1837 which caused a general economic depression that affected all sections of society. However, because militias could not be raised through normal taxation or conscription, they were instead funded through private donations and subscriptions from individuals and businesses. This gave rise to the legend that members of the National Guard are "rowdy cowboys" who enjoy drinking and gambling free from government control. One such individual who contributed to the growth of the National Guard was John Brown who led an insurrection against slavery in Kansas in 1858. After his successful uprising, Brown began donating money and arms to local militias throughout America in order to support future uprisings. In 1865, after Confederate troops invaded Texas, Brown helped lead an army opposing intervention by Union troops at Harney County Battlefield where he was killed. This event is considered one of the earliest examples of self-defense against federal aggression within American society. Due to these events and others like it, over time there has been a growing appreciation for both militaries as well as their role in society. Today, soldiers from all corners of America volunteer their time and resources to serve our country at home or abroad with distinction thanks to modern equipment and technology means that even today's smallest unit can be mobilized quickly and effectively should something happen beyond your control
West Columbia, South Carolina is a town located in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina. The population was 9,814 as of 2010. It is the county seat for Richland County and also includes portions of Spartanburg County. West Columbia is known for its beautiful downtown area which features a mix of old and new architecture, as well as its rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The town was founded in 1828 by General James Wilkinson, who served as governor of South Carolina from 1827 to 1830. West Columbia became an independent city in 1906 after it seceded from Richland County. In 1930, it merged with neighboring Clemson to form the University of South Carolina-West Columbia (USCWC). Today, USCWC has more than 22,000 students and staff members who contribute to its many programs and services.
The town of Columbia was founded by the British in 1795 and named for the Scottish city of Edinburgh. The town grew rapidly due to its location next to the Indian and slave markets, and it became an important center for cotton production. In 1829, Columbia became a state capital, and in 1881, it was renamed Charleston.
