West Columbia is a city in the U.S. state of South Carolina. It was settled in 1781 by English colonists and is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the United States. The area now includes the City of West Columbia, as well as unincorporated areas within the limits of Columbia County and Calhoun County. As of 2009, West Columbia had a total population of 97,651 people. The original settlers were Englishmen who came from Hampshire and Dorset in England on planting ships called "Booth" in 1781. They named their new town for Lord Botetourt, who had led them to this location when they sailed from London on board HMS Beagle in 1770-71. The first African American to live in West Columbia was Obadiah Blackburn, who arrived with his family in 1824 from Savannah, Georgia. He worked as a laborer on the local farm until he could purchase land and build himself a home near what is now Interstate 95 and US 21/23A
