West Columbia, South Carolina is a city in the Palmetto State of South Carolina, United States. The population was 53,883 at the 2010 census. West Columbia is the second most populous city in South Carolina after Charleston. It lies along the Cooper River and Interstate 95. The first mention of West Columbia was in 1685 when General James Robertson erected a cabin on what is now Pope's Ferry Road. The success and stability brought about by this nucleus led to growth in pleasure resorts located along both sides of the Cooper River – including Newport News onthe Eastern Shore and Hilton Head Island onthe Western Shore – until finally attracting large numbers (40%+) white settlement during World War II with plans for defense purposes only; accordingly few Negroes remained until after 1945 when economic opportunity revived much among both groups?s constituents? Afterward, many residents moved out of West Columbia and it gradually lost its importance as a commercial center. However, some residents remain active in local politics and culture today.
