One of the earliest artisanal coffee shops was founded in 1892 by a husband-and-wife team named Fredrick Crane and Abby Hockaday. The couple started out serving single-origin espresso drinks from a small storefront on Sixth Street in downtown San Francisco. In 1923, Crane bought out Hockaday’s share in the business andKeep San Francisco’s first true “artisanal” shop open until 1974 when it moved to 156 McDowell Street in Palo Alto. In 1974, Don White handed over ownership of Whites Brewing Company to his son Bruce White(*), which led to Whites becoming one of California's most popular craft brewers*.
