The history of artisan coffee in West Columbia, South Carolina goes back to the 1880s. Coffee was first brewed and sold by African Americans in the city. Over time, this tradition has continued and today,West Columbia is home to some of the most renowned artisan coffee shops in the Southeast. One of the earliest West Columbia coffee shops was The Coffee House on Broad Street. This shop served up a variety of drinks and pastries from local roasters such as Peoples Coffee Company and Maxwell House. Today, The Coffee House boasts an extensive menu that includes both breakfast and lunch items as well as a wide selection of espresso beverages. Another early pioneer in the industry was Mr. Willard's Cafeteria on Meeting Street. This restaurant served up a wide variety of food including sandwiches, salads, burgers, chickenfried steak, macaroniandcheese dishes, etc.—all made fresh on site with local produce. The Japanese immigrants who arrived in South Carolina in the mid-19th century began to grow and process coffee beans. In 1875, Japan's first coffee roaster was opened in Columbia.

West Columbia, South Carolina is a city in the U.S. state of South Carolina and the county seat of Sumter County. The population was 53,824 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Ashley River in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina. The area that would become West Columbia was first settled by indigenous Americans in 1772 when Chief Seaweed's party journeyed from Charleston to find new land for their tribe. The town was founded in 1822 by James Fayette and his family as an overflow settlement from nearby Yorktown, which had been burned by Confederate forces during the American Civil War. In 1890, West Columbia became part of newly created Sumter County after its eastern border was changed to match that of neighboring Anderson County. In 2006, West Columbia became one of eight cities in South Carolina to receive a waiver from federal stimulus funding due to its low joblessness rate and lack of infrastructure replacement needs. These businesses were typically between the ages of 12 and 25 years old, and they were responsible for roasting their own beans, grinding their own beans, and packaging their own coffee. Many of these businesses were also involved in other aspects of the coffee industry such as marketing, shipping, and customer service. One of the earliest artisanal coffee shops was founded in 1892 by a husband-and-wife team named Fredrick Crane and Abby Hockaday. The couple started out serving single-origin espresso drinks from a small storefront on Sixth Street in downtown San Francisco. In 1923, Crane bought out Hockaday’s share in the business andKeep San Francisco’s first true “artisanal” shop open until 1974 when it moved to 156 McDowell Street in Palo Alto. During its time at 156 McDowell Street, the shop served over 100 different flavor profiles including Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Coffee Beans*, Guatemalan Honduras Altiplano Cacao*, Colombian Peruvian Andes* Bean Paste*, Italian Roasted Teavana Roasts*, Brazilian black Brazilians*}, Spanish Forte Coffee Pods*}, French Press *}, Turkish Delight **}, Belgian Chocolate Stout ***}). It is interesting to note that all but one of these flavors are still available today at 156 McDowell Street (the exception being Turkish Delight). Another early example of an artisanal café was launched in 1906 by Harry Blackmun with his company Blackmun Coffee Corporation*. This company served burley cigarettesethylnicotine) which gave it a unique flavor profile unique among retail establishments at this time. Shortly thereafter, Blackmun commenced production of high-quality roasted espresso beans under his name on Fillmore Avenue near Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.* He also opened up a bakery where he sold bread made with fresh roasted beans*. After Blacks Mun closed down his business in 1944 due to World War II rationing*, several other entrepreneurs took over operation of his legacy including Bob Koppenstein who reopened Blacks Mun Coffee Corporation*in 1947 as Don White's Brewers Cooperative*]. In 1974, Don White handed over ownership of Whites Brewing Company to his son Bruce White(*), which led to Whites becoming one of California's most popular craft brewers*. Today Whites Brewing Company operates as a brewing cooperative which offers tours and tastings for customers.*
