West Columbia is a city in the U.S. state of South Carolina. West Columbia was founded on April 9, 1871, by George C. Pickens and J.B. Morton as a town within the then-new Richland County.[1] The population of West Columbia was 27,752 at the 2010 census,[2] making it the second most populous city in South Carolina after Savannah.[3] The downtown area has been called "the cultural center of Charleston" due to its concentration of high-end businesses and professional institutions. On February 12, 1865, Union General William Tecumseh Sherman had ordered General Benjamin Butler to march through South Carolina with his army towards Savannah to cut off Confederate supplies and reinforcements during the American Civil War. Sherman's orders allowed for Butler's units to pillage and burn any towns they encountered along their route, which created an uproar among local residents who saw this as another example of Federal interference in their way of life. In 1861 Pickens had started a small cotton plantation called White Sulphur Springs east of town that he continued until 1875 when he sold it to Aiken County farmers for $5 per acre (or $116 annually).[4] In 1870 George C Pickens purchased 10 acres from Aiken County farmer Amos Beasley for $15 per acre (or $248 annually).[5][6] At that time there were only about 50 people living in what is now known as Pickensville according to one source;[7] however, by 1880 there were over 1,000 people living there including 300 slaves who worked onPickens' plantation.[8][9][10][11][12] Atraca Pritchard bought 2/3 interest in White Sulphur Springs from Pickens on October 12th 1881[13]: so appximately 1 year later pickensville would have consisted mostly white households with slave labor
The area now known as Columbia, South Carolina was first settled by English traders in the late 15th century. The early colonists were farmers and hunters who traded with Native Americans. In 1685, Englishman James I granted a Charter to the town of Columbia which became the capital of South Carolina. The town grew rapidly and by 1795 had a population of over 100 people. It was during this time that the first school was built in Columbia and the first courthouse was erected. In 1813, South Carolina became a state and Columbia became its capital. The city continued to grow and by 1845 it had a population of over 1,500 people.During the American Civil War (1860-1865), Columbia sided with Confederate States of America (CSAC) against Union forces. The city suffered some damage but ultimately emerged victorious thanks to its strategic location on river routes providing access to resources such as cotton fields and saltpeter mines. After Reconstruction (1870-1877), growth slowed due to economic issues such as low commodity prices, segregationism, and an increase in black migration from Africa
