In 1916, D'Angelo sold his business to Harry Sato who continued to operate it as Delta Coffee Co., Ltd.. In 1929, Harry Sato passed away and his son Clifford took over operations as Delta Coffee Co., Inc.. In 1961, Clifford Sato sold the company to United States Coffee Corporation (USCC) which continued operation until 1984 when it merged with Peruvian coffee giant Intelsat Corporation to form World Wide Coffee Limited (WLC). The first school building was erected on this site in 1840. In 1850, it became an incorporated village with a government body under the name of "City of Sumter". By 1860, the village had lost its charter because of financial problems. In 1865-1866, Confederate Major General Braxton Bragg made his home in Sumter while commandeering supplies from Union forces besieging Fort Fisher during their attempt to invade Hilton Head Island off Cape Lookout Peninsula; he called upon residents to provide food and munitions for his troops as they besieged Fort Fisher from October 15-November 5th . On November 8th local residents staged a nonviolent sit-in at City Hall to demand that their city's mayor remove Bragg from command due to poor public discipline; after several hours of peaceful resistance (including chants of "no taxation without representation"), Mayor James Fenton relented and allowed Bragg's presence within the limits of the city until further notice on November 11th . This event is often cited as one of the turning points that led to secession from the United States by South Carolina
