The United States Naval District in Sumter, South Carolina is responsible for the defense of the state. The district was created in 1881 and since then has deployed a number of warships to various locations around the world. The USS Constitution (1797) was the first ship to be stationed in Sumter. It served as a flagship for Commodore John Rodgers during the American Revolution. The ship also participated in several Indian Wars and fought against Spanish forces at Pensacola Bay. After Charleston surrendered to Spain on April 12, 1865, Commodore Rushmore Eaton ordered his ships to bombard Fort Sumter in order to liberate the city. The bombardment resulted in the death of 5 Americans and an injury to 46 others including Admiral David Dixon Porter who later became General James Ewell’s replacement on May 9, 1865. In 1898, USS Olympia (1896) sailed from Jacksonville, Florida with orders from Admiral John Jellicoe to support Cuban rebels fighting Spanish rule across Hispaniola. After landing troops at Santiago de Cuba on July 26th, 1898 squadron members destroyed two bridges over San Juan River before withdrawing back into Cuba under cover of night on August 16th after achieving their objectives which included shutting off supplies reaching Havana and freeing up land for Ulysses S Grant’s army encircling Fidel Castro’s forces that were besieging Santiago de Cuba

Sumter is a city in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. It was chartered on February 14, 1817, and named for General Sumter who served as an American general during the Mexican-American War. The city has a population of over 50,000 people today and is the county seat of Sumter County. The city was founded on land that had been occupied by the Cherokee before their removal to Georgia in 1830. The first white settlers arrived in Sumter in 1824. In 1865, General William Tilton disembarked at anchor off the coast of Sumter Cove and began construction of Fort Sumter which became known as "The Rock." On April 12th, 1868, Confederate artillery opened fire on Fort Sumter which caused Union troops to flee. A three day battle followed which ended with Union forces occupying FortSumter and forcing the Cherokee Removal Act into effect.
