Sumter, South Carolina is a town located in the US state of South Carolina. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sumter County. According to the US Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 44 square miles (118 km2), of which 43 square miles (117 km2) is land and 1 square mile (3 km2) (0.34%) is water. The first white person to reside in what is now Sumter County was Joseph Riggs in 1824. At that time, Sumter County consisted of eight settlements: Aiken, Ackerman, Allendale, Bargersville, Beaufort, Bridgwater, and Columbia. In 1827 David Fenton established a small trading post at present-day Greenville; it was called "Fenton's Post." In 1829 Gabriel Pemberton founded Fort Moultrie on high ground about three miles northwest of modern Sumtertown on what became known as Pemberton’s Plantation and later assurrounded by cotton fields leased from slaveholders. Ulysses S Grant visited Fort Moultrie in 1863 during his tour of duty as military governor of South Carolina before his inauguration as President Of The United States The fort served as an important supply depot for Union forces during the American Civil War On April 14th 1861 Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked Federal troops near Greenville while they were quelling a local uprising led by John Wilkes Booth Ewell's force numbered approximately 4500 men with 3 cannons and 2 mortars Two days later Union forces under George Halleck arrived at Fort Moultrie and secured control over portions of Sumter County including Greenville Island where Ewell had positioned himself

Sumter is a town located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The population was 9,527 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sumter County and contains most of the city of Sumter. The first European to visit what is now Sumter County was Captain James Cook on his third voyage in 1793, who named it "Easter Island" after his homeland, England. The first permanent settler in what would become Sumter County was John White in 1851, and he built a cabin on the high ground overlooking present-day downtown Sumter. In 1857, General Andrew Johnson ordered all white male citizens of Georgia to leave for fear that they might form a rebellion against him during the American Civil War. Confederate forces burned down White's cabin and storehouse, but not before he had stored many supplies including food for his people and horses for military purposes inside. This event helped spur development in what would become Sumter County as more people realized there could be no living off rural land without some type of commerce or industry available to support them. On February 15, 1861, Confederate Major General Pembroke Hoke attacked Union troops near Fort Wagner in western South Carolina while they were encampmenting encamped around Charleston; this attack marked one of several major engagements between Confederate forces and Union troops during the early stages of the American Civil War. Aftermath showed that Union forces lacked firepower to effectively resist Confederate assaults and withdrew under heavy losses: only 1 percent (of 98) destroyed enemy camps resulted from coordinated attacks by both sides employing artillery fire alone; however these engagements did result in large numbers killed or wounded among both sides' ranks attributable to cavalry operations combined with infantry assaults).
