In 1881, Captain John Brown founded the first coffee house in Sumter with his wife Lucy. The business continued to grow and prosper until it was acquired by the National Coffee Company in 1912. The company discontinued its involvement with Sumter in 1966.

The population was estimated at 10,824 in 2000 and has grown steadily since then, reaching 12,664 as of 2013. Sumter is a largely agricultural county with a significant amount of land used for coal mining and other extractive industries. The county's economy is based largely on tourism, manufacturing, and agriculture. Despite its size, Sumter has developed a strong community spirit that continues to make it a popular place to live and work.
As coffee enthusiasts, we often hear about the different Starbucks that have been around for years. However, few people realize that there are actually 3 distinct types of artisanal coffee beans. Each bean has a unique flavor and produces a different cup of coffee. The first type is the Arabica beans. These beans are sourced from growers in Africa and Indonesia who roast their own coffee under specific conditions to create an intense and flavorful cup of joe. These beans are also usually roasted more slowly than some other types so they retain their flavor profile longer. The second type is the Robusta beans. This variety was developed in Italy during the 1940s by starting out with only 100% Arabica beans, which gives it a rich, robust flavor similar to Starbuck's modern Guatemalan blend beans. The Robusta beans are hand selected and roasted at very high temperatures to produce a smooth, rich cup of coffee that can be enjoyed any time of day or year. Lastly, there is the Kenyan Kenya Coffee Bean! This bean comes from Kenya but is processed differently than any other type of artisanal coffee because it undergoes a special process called roasting in sunnier climates which gives it its characteristic sweet flavor and aroma
The history of artisan coffee starts with the beginning of coffee farming. Coffee beans were first grown in central and South America, but it wasn’t until the early 1800s that coffee started being roasted and brewed in Europe. The first espresso machines were created in Italy in 1868, and by the end of the century, espresso had become a popular drink all over the world.
Sumter was founded in 1835 by General David Sumter and his wife, Lucy. The town grew quickly and became a major center for cotton production. In 1857, Sumter was the site of a bloody Battle of Sumter which led to the secession of South Carolina from the United States. Today, Sumter remains a small community with strong ties to its history. The town's earliest settlers were white planters who came from Georgia and Alabama. After acres were sold in 1835, construction began on what would become the city of Sumter. The first courthouse was built in 1840 and soon there were several sawmills, grist mills, and other businesses active in the town. In 1846, General John Cordingly donated land to build an academy which would serve as both a school and training ground for Confederate officers. During World War II, many jobs in Sumter went to soldiers on leave or those displaced by war efforts elsewhere in the South. Afterward, many residents returned to their homes but some continued living in the city until it ceased operation at its peak in 1970. Now thatowntownSumter is home to several restaurants, galleries, museums, and recreational facilities including two golf courses (one open year-round), two baseball diamonds/umpire cages/stadiums - one constructed specifically for SUMTER GAMES -and a large library system serving all of Charleston County!
In 1835, Sumter was part of the Unionist party that helped keep South Carolina in the United States during the American Civil War. After the war, Sumter became a slaveholding state and is today known for its white supremacist history.
