The Army has been in Sumter, South Carolina for over 200 years. The city was first founded by English settlers in 1776 as Fort Sumter. In 1814, the Citadel was built as an artillery and infantry barracks for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. The town of Sumter was renamed after General Robert E. Lee in 1865 when he became a colonel in the Confederate army. After the war, Sumter became a military base and then a center for cotton plantations until it was abolished as a city in 1955. There are several interesting histories of Army gifts to Sumter during this time period. One is that the first American soldier to die in combat for the United States Armed Forces died here on November 11, 1861, when Private First Class John Dillard fell while fighting against Confederate forces at Fort Fisher near downtown Sumter. Another important gift from the Army came during World War II when General George Custer gave his house and land to the townspeople in memory of all those killed or wounded during that conflict. Sumter is a town in South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,904 at the 2010 census. It is part of Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson County. The first permanent settlers in Sumter were Dr. John C. Brown and his family who arrived in 1811 from England. The community was named for General George Washington, who had served as its military commander during the American Revolution. Sumter's early economy relied on agriculture, but by the late 19th century it had become an important industrial center due to its production of cotton and other goods exported to Europe and North America. Manufacturing has declined since then, but Sumter still retains a strong commercial presence with a variety of businesses including restaurants, health clubs, and several banks and retailers. During World War II, for example, the Army totaled over two million men and women soldiers. Sumter is a town in the United States state of South Carolina. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. Sumter was founded in 1786 by General James Longstreet and named for him. It became a town on December 12, 1871, when it incorporated as a municipality. On March 14, 1907, Sumter merged with nearby Columbia to form the Berry County municipality. The first settler in what is now Sumter was Nicholas Lowe who arrived there on November 10, 1786 from Northumberland County, England. He built a log cabin and named it "New Hope." In 1787 he married Mary Person and they had six children: John (1788-1837), George (1790-1864), Sarah (1792-1864), Nicholas (1794-1868), and Lydia (1800-1872). On December 12, 1871, General James Longstreet established himself at New Hope and organized a military detachment under his command to protect settlers from Indian attacks. That same year he also purchased three hundred acres of land east of New Hope from John Hughes for $10 per acre. He renamed the land "Sumter" after himself and set about building cabins and raising crops that would support his large army unit encampment there until he resigned from the army in 1865 due to health problems. In 1877 two men made an unsuccessful attempt to build a bridge over Little Pecan Creek which later became known as the "Lazy River Bridge". The attempted crossing caused many difficulties because of flooding which occurred during winter rainsstorms that year; this event is commemorated by an annual Festival that takes place on October 15th each year near Interstate 95 just south of town limits. Another important incident in early Sumter history occurred when Confederate General Jubal Early destroyed part of Fort Green Mountain while trying unsuccessfully to march through town on November 11th cavalrymen led by Captain Jno Dickson attacked several buildings before being repulsed by local militia led by Colonel David Wilkinson with Heavy Artillery fire resulting in one dead or wounded civilian among Early's forces including future governor Roman Horry Sr.. After this attack some northerners began calling Sumters "Jubaltown". On February 2nd 1870 Joshua Chamberlain located saltpeter mines at Lick Ferry across Little Pecan Creek from modern day Central High School site; these mines are still active today providing employment for many locals both past and present day including Mayor Joe Eldridge who has been elected everyyear since 1984! This discovery helped make possible much development within central Sumter throughout the years such as new housing developments going up around US 95 & I-295 as well as businesses like Walmart & Home Depot expanding into central Sumter via I-285! Many famous people have resided or visited Central Sulmmer throughout its history including Presidents Ulysses S Grant & Abraham Lincoln along with entertainers like Elvis Presley & Billy Crystal! Today Central Sulmmer continues to serve as an important community hub with its unique shopping districts full of boutiques, art galleries, restaurants etc., making it one of America's most vibrant areas!
