Today, its sole coffee shop, The Coffee House, remains a popular tourist destination for coffee enthusiasts from all over the Southeast. Summerville's history with coffee goes back to at least 1845. A group of farmers in the area began growing coffee plants and selling pods to local merchants. By 1850, Summerville had become an important stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1865, Union General Ulysses S Grant passed through Summerville on his way to Gettysburg. After the battle, Grant ordered his troops to destroy all evidence of their plantation operations in Forsyth County. This destroyed both crops and memories of slavery in the area. In addition to its role as a stopping point on the Underground Railroad, Summerville also served as a major center for brewing coffee during Reconstruction Era America. Between 1892 and 1896, summervilers produced more than 2 million pounds of beans per year at their two plantations alone – more than any other town in South Carolina combined! During this time period, many young men and women concluded their educations at nearby Fayetteville or Columbia University and returned home to help build up one of America's most vital industries – manufacturing!
