Summerville, South Carolina is a town in Charleston County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2000 census. The town is named after Summerville Plantation in Kershaw County, South Carolina. The first navy gift to be given to Summerville was a cannon by Rear Admiral John A. Pollard in 1836. It was an early gift from the United States Navy to help protect Charleston and its harbor during the 1830s and 1840s against British pirates. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell gave a cannonship called "Pine Top" to Summerville residents in order to help defend the town from Union troops marching through on Easter Sunday 1865. Navy ships have been present in Summerville since 1898 when USS Constitution (1898) sailed into town for repairs following her collision with USS Maine (1890). After serving as flagship of Commodore David Farragut's squadron during World War II, USS Sampson (1946) arrived here after being decommissioned at NAS Norfolk, Virginia. She served as command ship of Naval District Charleston-Northwest until she was sold and scrapped in 1970. Summerville is a small town in Lowndes County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pee Dee Metropolitan Statistical Area. Summerville was founded in 1827 by Scots-Irish immigrants who had emigrated to America from Ulster. The community grew up around an Episcopal church and school located on the edge of town, and soon became a center for agricultural production and commerce. In 1868, Summerville incorporated as a city and began to develop into a prosperous cotton town with large stores, churches, public square, Masonic lodge and several mills. In the late 19th century, however, Summerville experienced rapid growth thanks to its location on the railroad corridor connecting Charleston to Atlanta and Savannah. Many new businesses were built in what is now Summerville - such as Sears Roebuck & Co., J H Randolph Brewing Company (later Sunbeam Brewing), Coca Cola Refreshments (now Coca-Cola), First National Bank and many other major companies that continue to operate today. During World War II many residents served in the military; one local resident even helped create Camp Lejeune which became one of the largest amphibious training exercises in American history after being initiated by General Dwight Eisenhower. After the war ended most businesses closed down but some continued operations until they too went out of business during the Great Recession of 2008-2009. A few notable survivors include Sunbeam Breweries (now known as Southern Star Beverages) and Randolph Air Force Base which still operates today as part of Military Airlift Command's Fifth Air Force carrying troops and cargo worldwide

In 1813, while on parade at Havana, Cuba, the Constitution's crew entertained Spanish troops with a performance of "The Battle Hymn of San Miguel." The following year, Commodore James K. Polk ordered the Constitution to join his fleet off Tampa Bay to attack British warships during the Seminole War. On 12 October 1814, after days of battle and heavy casualties on both sides, the Constitution struck her colors and surrendered. The ship was used as a prison for sailors who had mutinied in Florida during the Mexican-American War. In 1870 she was sold to Sweden for £2 million and renamed Kungsbacken
Summerville was founded in 1784 by the Rev. John Summerville, a Presbyterian minister. The town was named for the summertime sun that shone on it during its early days. In 1871, Summerville became a cotton plantation center and remained so until the late 1800s when it began to decline in population and importance. In the 1930s,Summerville experienced an influx of refugees from the Great Depression and during World War II, many residents volunteered to serve in the military. Many of these residents also built homes in Summerville after they returned home. Today, Summerville is an agricultural community with a small population and limited commercial activity. It is still known for its peach orchards and ZIP code 70736 has been designated as the "Peach Capital of South Carolina."
