Summerville is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg–Anderson metropolitan area. The Summerville Volunteer Fire Department has been providing fire services for over ninety years and currently employs around seventy-five people. In addition to their regular fires department duties, the VFD also provides ambulance service, EMS response, and general purpose units for special events or protests. The VFD first responded to a fire in the town on July 16th 1907. At that time they were able to use their horses and ATVs to transport water from a nearby well to put out the fire which had started in a barn. They haven't responded since then but continue to provide emergency services today! In 1951 they donated their " squadron" of four engine ladders (which are still used) for use by firefighters assigned to other departments in Spartanburg County. This was followed by another donation of two engines (in 1956) and one Ladder truck (in 1968). There have been many donations throughout the years including an engine house/garage (in 1988), two hoses (in 1995), three trucks (2001), four engines(2008), six pumps(2013), eight trailers(2015) and an HCU helicopter pad in 2018! All of these items make up what is now known as "the Summerville Volunteer Fire Department Museum." Today's summerville volunteer fire department began with just one ladder truck and one engine from 1951-1968. They received their second engine in 1978 when they replaced an old TxDiesel Engine with a new HEMI EngINEer! From 1978-2018 they've received eleven new engines! This number will continue increasing until we reach our goal of twenty five new engines! all this equipment makes us so powerful and able to do whatever we need to when we need it!

Summerville is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Asheville metropolitan area. Summerville was laid out by Moses Holland in 1820 and named for John Summer, who had settled nearby in 1816. The first post office was established in 1828. The first store was built in 1830. A sawmill and gristmill were founded in 1835 and 1840 respectively. A hotel was built in 1865 and additions were made to it until it closed its doors in 1886. A large cotton gin was built near the town limits by Elisha Gray in 1865. The textile industry became important to Summerville after it began production there of white cotton thread that would be turned into clothing by local manufacturers using German machinery imported from Germany. In 1916, the summer heat caused extensive damage to some of the larger plants within this industry which led to a decline for these mills but also helped spur development of new industries such as heavy manufacturing and plastics during World War I. During World War II, the war effort required much more manpower than had been available before so many men were drafted into service from within South Carolina so most businesses closed or switched to wartime production methods like assembly lines instead of having their employees work day and night for weeks on end depending on whether they could get a job or not; however,Summerville did continue to produce munitions through local companies until 1945 when all production came to an end due to Allied bombings raids on Germany that destroyed much of what remained of this industry there as well as other southern factories that produced chemical weapons during World War II
Summerville was founded in 1795 by John Summerville and his wife, Susannah. The town was named for the summer months, specifically July-August. It became a village in 1824. In 1872, Summerville was incorporated as a city.
