Summerville is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 793 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first summer settlers in Summerville were English Puritans who arrived from nearby Savannah in 1670. They constructed a log cabin on the site of present day Summerville in 1796. The original name for the community was "Greeneville". In 1807, General Andrew Jackson moved his army through Spartanburg County and into this area when he destroyed Fort Moultrie on Pee Dee Island. After the Battle of New Market (1807), Jackson's forces traveled south through Spartanburg County and upriver to Mobile Bay where they burned all buildings along the way before entering South Carolina. The town was platted by James Fenton in 1828 and named for General Robert Easley, who had been killed during the Indian War at Blackwater Creek in Georgia three years earlier. The first store opened in 1830. In 1840, a post office was established here under the name of "Canton". A sawmill operated here until 1857 when it closed due to lack of customers; however, it reopened two years later as an agricultural mercantile establishment called "Fenton & Son". The town's population reached 1,000 by 1860 but declined over time because most people worked outside the community or farms instead of joining towns formed around rural areas throughout Spartanburg County during that time period. However, with increased access to education and transportation via railroads coming into town after World War II, Summerville began to experience a resurgence as an economic center beginning around 1960s especially as new businesses started up such as dry-cleaning establishments and burger joints which gave rise to various names like "Summervilles" throughout its history including current sobriquet "Summerville." In recent years there has been some development taking place such as a new Walmart Supercenter being built on Highway 278 about six miles west of town limits near what used to be known as Gaffney Depot which will bring significant job growth specifically within their employe
