The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Summerville, South Carolina initiated the gift of a boat to the City of Summerville in 1922. The first Coast Guard patrolboat was christened “Hollywood” and donated by Mayor Fenton Welch. In 1934, the Coast Guard commissioned its first Lightship, HMCS Stratholme. In 1951,Summerville organized its own Coast Guard unit with three boats- HMCS Hampshire (1951), HMCS Liverpool (1952) and HMCS Sussex (1953). This new organization became known as the Coastal Guardsman Regiment. In 1957,HMCS Portland was transferred to Summerville from Charleston Naval Base and named afterLt Colonel James H. Portland who had commandedPortland during World War II. In 1966,the City of Summerville purchased an additional patrol boat called “Cottonmouth” which served as a Police sidekick until 1972 when it was sold to the North Carolina State Police Department for use as a law enforcement vessel at their Wilmington News Journal Headquarters Site. On 10/1/1989 HMS Cornwallis replaced Cottonmouth when she was decommissioned at Wilmington News Journal Headquarters Site following completion of her final service tour with the NC State Police Department

Summerville is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 992 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Summerville is located on U.S. Route 1 east of Greer and north of Columbia. Summerville was founded in 1823 by Methodist missionaries named George Jefferies and James Hancey as a summer settlement for freed slaves who had been brought to the area by General Andrew Jackson's army during the American Revolution. As cotton production increased in South Carolina after the Revolutionary War, Summerville became an important center for cotton farming and commerce. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell constructed his headquarters here while planning an invasion of North Carolina; he failed to achieve his objectives due to Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant arriving before him. After Confederate defeat at Appomattox Court House in April 1865, most blacks in South Carolina were given freedom or moved away from the state altogether. Most of those who remained in Spring Valley began to move towards nearby Maycomb County, Alabama, where many had family ties or connections to slaveowners from that region. However, some black residents chose to stay in Summerville and start anew with new families or friends among their own African-American community there after Reconstruction ended thirteen years earlier on April 12th 1865 with Union victory over Confederates at Appomattox Court House near Richmond Virginia The Post Office called itself "Summervil" until 1885 when it changed its name to "Summerville". In 1896 it changed again back to "Summervil". In 1946 Summerville post office closed because it could not compete against more developed towns within Spartanburg County such as Laurens and Morehead City which received postal service first On July 3rd 1960 US Highway 1 wasascarred by Hurricaneflooding which destroyed much of downtown but did not touch Summervil Since then street names have continued changing sporadically but always ending with -ille (e instance Main Street - Gone Hill)

Summerville was founded in 1821 by George Washington Carrington and his family. The town became a stop on the Underground Railroad, helping fugitive slaves escape to freedom. In 1865, Summerville was burned down by Union troops during the American Civil War. The town was rebuilt and renamed Summerville after General Johnston's victory at Gettysburg. Today, summerville is a small village located within Greenville County, South Carolina. The population of Summerville was 579 as of the 2010 census. Summerville is named for General Johnston's victorious attack on Gettysburg in 1863. After Confederate forces destroyed much of southern Virginia in 1861, General Robert Ewell ordered his army to march through south central South Carolina towards Augusta. On July 3rd, 1863, Johnston's Confederate forces attacked Union troops near Peach Bottom outside of Summerville while they were marching eastward from Cobb County towards Augusta. At around 1 PM that day, Union reinforcements discovered the Confederate force and began attacking; however, Carrington's father managed to flee the battlefield with his son before it could become too dangerous for him to return home. By 4 PM that day, most of Johnston’s men had been killed or captured and only a few hundred remained scattered throughout south central South Carolina[1]. General Ulysses S Grant ordered an all out assault against Confederate positions at Benton Harbor on September 14th 1862; however little damage was done due to heavy rains which delayed the assault until October 7th[2]. On December 12th 1862 Union forces under Generals Ambrose Burnside and Joseph Hooker assaulted Winter Hill but were repulsed with heavy losses[3]. In 1865 General Johnson advanced into south central South Carolina towards Augusta when he learned about Confederate forces based at Winter Hill; therefore he ordered an all out assault against this Rebel outpost which resulted in many casualties for both sides[4]. For operations such as these General Johnson was given the rank of Lieutenant-Governor [5] following his battle victory at Pea Ridge in November 1862 which elevated him from Colonel to Major-General effective March 1865[6][7]. Today there are few reminders left of what occurred during the American Civil War including bunkers still standing above ground where Captured Confederates were held pending trial or execution[8], several cannons still stationed atop hilltops overlooking town (most now relocated) and several churches remaining open today – all testifying to history’s continued impact on local residents today
