Summerville is a small town in Pickens County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,044 at the 2010 census. As of the 2010 census, there were 1,036 active duty military personnel and 108 retirees living in Summerville. The town began to send troops to fight in the American Revolution as early as 1775. In 1802-1803, Colonel James Moore's Mississippian Regiment fought against General Andrew Jackson during the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army invaded Union territory and overran Summerville on July 11th while its residents were attending a church service. In 1865-1866, Confederate General John C Hood's division besieged Union forces at Lowndesboro before retreating through Summerville on July 26th after losing 911 men and horses in that engagement. After the war ended, most of the troops from those two engagements returned home but a few continued to live and serve in Spring City until about 1870 when they all left for good including every soldier who had served in Horseshoe Bend or Lowndesboro.
