Summerville, South Carolina is a town in rural Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 3,332 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson Combined Statistical Area. The Summerville Air Force Base Municipal Airport is located in Summerville. The base also has an auxiliary airfield which can be used for emergency landings and other purposes when needed by the Air Force. July 1st through December 31st each year sees the "Air Force's Christmas in South Carolina" event where citizens from around the area come to celebrate with local military members and their families who are stationed at AFB during that time period. This year's event will be on Saturday, December 12th from 10am to 4pm at AFB. In 1951, USAF activated AF Summerville as a bombing squadron because it was too far away for RAF Sprucey to provide security for Pine Bluff Naval Air Station which was then under construction on Beaufort Island (now Myrtle Beach). The first bombardier assigned to AF Summerville was Capt (later Maj) Floyd Hinton and his men shaped up at Rucker Army Air Field and took off on their first mission on September 15th against a Japanese airfield near Laddsboro, North Carolina; they bombed successfully! One of ouringuished officers that day was Col John Pemberton who commanded Ninth Bombardment Wing RAF Bentwaters during Operation Torch/Axis Attack on D-Day - he later became Vice President of World War II Headquarters European Theater of Operations - eventually being decorated with the Legion d'Honneur! By 1958 all three squadrons had been reabsorbed into RAF Sprucey but summer operations continued until 1960 when hostilities ended."

Summerville is a small town in South Carolina, United States. The population was 714 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg–Anderson County, South Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area. Summerville is located on the Savannah River and about 20 miles east of Spartanburg. The first summer settlers in what is now Summerville were white men who arrived from Georgia in 1807. They named their town after the summer season, because they found it easy to get food and water when it was hot outside. The cotton industry began to grow in nearby Newberry County in the 1830s, and by 1840 there were over 100 families living in Summerville. In 1851, two brothers, James and John Pemberton, bought land around present-day Summerville and began to build a mill which became one of the largest textile mills in America. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Easley attacked Union forces during the American Civil War near present-day Summerville. Approximately 30 residents from surrounding towns helped fight for Confederate troops until they were surrounded and surrendered at Appomattox Court House with Easley leading the way. Many of these soldiers died as a result of their wounds or capture during this engagement; some remain honored today as Heroes Of The Confederacy. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, many African Americans left for various reasons including integration into white society or relocation to other parts of America; however, many young black men from central South Carolina remained behind to take up farming or fishing operations that would provide them with subsistence income until after World War II when they turned to manufacturing jobs opportunities due to technological advancement (Cabrera). Today there are few African Americans remaining residing within limits of Summerville except for a handful who work inside local businesses (www://www.rootswebphoto.com/~southerncoast/summervilletown_history1). It should be noted that while most people born within commuting distance of Springdale will experience some degree form economic duress due to its location on I-85 highway just minutes away (euphemistically called "the beltway"), SummersVILLE has avoided becoming victimized by development projects located further away like much larger municipalities such as Columbia SC where large influxes of non-native English speakers have resulted not only in social strife but also increased crime rates - an issue exacerbated by Interstate 95's overall width which creates travel arrangements problems for locals trying desperately to avoid getting mugged on their daily errands

After World War II, summerliners abandoned their homes and businesses due to increased competition from new residents and limited job opportunities. Today, there is about one residence per thousand people in Summerville.
