Spartanburg is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,873 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Spartanburg County. Spartanburg is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to come to what is now Spartanburg County were white soldiers from North Carolina who fought in the American Civil War and returned home with tales of Indian slavery and scalping. In 1801, Englishman Sir Walter Raleigh explored and mapped much of what is now south central South Carolina while on his way to find a route to India. He named the area "Spartanburgh" after General David Steele's brigade that he commandeered from Native Americans near present-day Yorktown, Virginia during their march through that state in 1781. On October 15, 1851, Confederate General Robert Ewell's army attacked Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant at Pea Ridge as they converged on Richlands along I-85 south of Knoxville; Chief Greene killed several Union soldiers before fleeing into nearby Cherokee Nation territory; this event became known as Battle of Pea Ridge (also known as Battle of Greasy Fork). In 1876, two years after African Americans had become citizens of South Carolina by Act No. 11 (1875), a group led by James Meredith founded Tuskegee Airmen Academy in Tuskegee University where black pilots flew ambulance missions during World War II for the Allies; this event also helped symbolize civil rights issues throughout many southern states later that decade.
