Spartanburg is a town in Pickens County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 3,391 at the 2010 census. Spartanburg is the county seat and largest city of Pickens County. It is part of the Greenville-Anderson-Mauldin Metropolitan Statistical Area. Spartanburg has an estimated economic value of $5 billion. The town was founded by white settlers in 1837 on land donated by James Alexander Johnston, a Cherokee Indian and slaveowner who had been given 1,000 acres (40 hectares) of upland in what is now Spartanburg County. The name "Spartanburg" comes from the Greek word sparta meaning "splendor." In 1860, Confederate General Robert Ewell's headquarters were located in Spartanburg on Post Road 2A about 12 miles (19 km) southeast of downtown Greenville; however, most military operations took place outside of Greenville. In 1871, two years after Johnston's death, his wife Jemima sold property within present-day Spartanburg to John Cockerill for $10 per acre ($2 million at current prices). Cockerill built a small Log Cabin colony nearpresent-day downtown Spartanburg and named it Fort Hill after Confederate General Robert Ewell's Headquarters during the American Civil War. A post office was established at Fort Hill in 1872; but because no mail arrived there until 1876 due to distance and difficulty getting through Indian country, the name for Ft. Hill changed to simply "Spartanburg." When Fort Hill became too expensive to maintain with only 10 residents living there full time during Reconstruction times when black people were not allowed to own land east of Jackson Avenueirted Charleston or west of Avery Street except as servants or sharecroppers under whiteownership laws passed following Reconstruction I began efforts among some local citizens to purchase & develop Forts Hill/Fort Payne which would become known as Sparta/Anderson/Mauldin which would be our new county seat….. After much discussion it was decided that Anderson would be our new county seat since it already had an excellent location (& we could build more hotels)…. so on March 17th 1865 when alledged legislation allowing blacks to own land east & west OF Jackson Aveirted Charleston b4 reintegration w/white people was Introduced into Congress (3rd day Of April 1865), Anderson’s Mayor Wm Hargrave submitted petitions (& signatures req’d) certifying that Anderson should be our new County Seat………. On May 8th 1865 Govt agreed(!!!)& Anderson became our New County Seat!
