In 1731, Englishman James Cook landed here with his ship " Discovery ". A landing by British forces at nearby Hilton Head on December 8, 1781 resulted in the Battle of Hilton Head Island which ended British efforts to expand their empire into America. It was during this battle that General John Sullivan (a native of Spartanburg) led an attack against a regiment commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Stonington which resulted in the death of over 50 men including Sullivan's brother-in-law Major John ForbesAn event which became known as Sullivan's Charge. In 1885, construction began on Spartanburg High School which opened its doors to students in October 1886. This was Spartanburg's first high school and became one of the largest high schools in South Carolina until it merged with Clemson University in 1986. Today, Spartanburg continues to grow as an educational community with many businesses and professionals moving here for job opportunities or investment opportunities. One significant event that took place throughout history associated with Spartanburg is the Battle of Bull Run Bridge where Confederate General Robert Ewell lost his life July 1861 while leading Confederate forces against Ulysses S Grant's Union army near what would become Knoxville, Tennessee later that year.
