Spartanburg is a town in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 12,148 at the 2000 census. Spartanburg is part of the Columbia metropolitan area. In February 1861, Confederate forces burned down the courthouse and 23 other buildings in downtown Spartanburg to prevent capture by Union troops under General Robert E. Lee. The site now houses a mixture of historical and modern architecture including the Spartanburg Museum of Art and the Spartanburg Convention Center which replaced the old courthouse in 2006. Spartanburg was platted on December 15, 1833, by Jethro Gibbs from what is now Aberdeen Township. The first post office was established in 1835. The name change from Aberdeen to Sparta on January 1, 1840; to Sparta Springs on November 10, 1845; and finally to Spartanburg on July 7, 1865 when it became a fashionable resort town for planters seeking an unspoiled environment away from city life. The village of Sparta began as a small hamlet near present-day Highway 27 about two miles east of where the university campus now stands.about 1830s settlers built log homes around a pond called Springetts Mill Pond near present day Old Courthouse Square.. A schoolhouse also stood thereabouts but functioned only as a summer school until1836 when it moved nearer what is now School Street.. About 1850 another mill known as White's Mills were located northeast corner of present day Court Square and John Street.. By 1860 this had mushroomed into an entire village with over 100 residents living primarily within walking distance or driving distance of one another forming small farms that grew cotton and corn for local markets A significant event that helped spur development came about when entrepreneur Thomas Fenton leased 8 acres (3 hectares) adjoining his house at 2122 Church St., lying northwest corner of present day Court Square along what is now Main Street for $200 per year starting in 1859 This allowed easy access to land for building projects such as roads and churches while providing security against squatters or raiders who might try seizing resources or settler property during boom times Also contributing were increasing numbers of white people coming to live here during this time period looking for opportunities away from slave-based economies back home So rapid was this growth that by 1870 only four original residents remained within walking distance (< 25 minutes)of each other with most clustered around CourtSquare barracks barracks then soon followed S Charleston . This geographic clustering reflected social patterns emerging among those early arrivals since many white men had married African American women seeking alliances with freedmen creating racially mixed households thereby reinforcing social distinctions between whites/master class vs slaves/workers class . Spartanburg, South Carolina is a small town located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 11,890 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Greenville-Aiken-Rock Hill Combined Statistical Area. Spartanburg is home to the University of South Carolina and its main campus as well as many other businesses and services. The downtown area has been preserved as part of a historic district since 1978. The town was named for General John Custer during the American Civil War because he and his unit were stationed there at Fort Davidson when Confederate forces retreated from Durhamtown on April 12, 1865. Spartanburg began settlement in 1824 by slave owners looking for new land to purchase after their slaves were freed from bondage in Georgia and Alabama. As development proceeded, slaves became free but continued to work on plantations until 1861 when Union troops captured all six plantations in Spartanburg County. The few remaining slaves were sold into servitude until 1863 when they were finally emancipated with compensation to their owners. In 1876, Mayor James Peebles suggested that the name be changed from "Spruce Grove" to "Spartanburg." A referendum approved the change two years later and the name was officially adopted on November 3, 1877 by a vote of 3–2 with one abstention due to lack of ballots cast. Between 1870 and 1910 some 360 people died from pneumonia caused by air pollution emanating from animal husbandry practices used within mile (1 km) of downtown Sparta; this included residents working near farms supplying meat for local markets which also emitted large amounts of smoke and gaspowder fumes daily throughout summer months without adequate ventilation or protection against these health hazards In 1916 an addendum was passed requiring that all schools open 5:00 am instead of previously 6:00 am so students could get an early start before going fishing or other outdoor activities which often led to school absences for those unable or unwilling to leave their homes early morning hours This addition increased school attendance among children living within 1 mile (1 km) or less distance from downtown Sparta where “the greatest number [of] cases occurred” Many African Americans worked alongside white farmers during this time as servants while still having access to education, food stamps and healthcare through personal connections made through family networks such as kinfolk relationships
